NORMAN —
Braxton Douthit pitched 6.1 shutout innings and
John Spikerman hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning to lead the Oklahoma baseball team to a 3-1 win over No. 11 TCU Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Sooners (12-7, 1-1 Big 12) evened the series with the Horned Frogs (10-8, 1-1 Big 12), setting up a rubber game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Spikerman's triple plated
Easton Carmichael and
Kendall Pettis, scoring the first runs of the game. TCU cut the lead to 2-1 on a home run by Brayden Taylor in the top of the eighth, but Oklahoma responded with a run in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly by
Jackson Nicklaus.
Douthit,
Carson Pierce and
Aaron Weber combined for a two-hit performance on the mound. Douthit (3-0) struck out two and allowed one hit over his 6.1 frames. Pierce finished the seventh inning, rolling a 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded to preserve OU's lead. Weber pitched the final two innings, striking out three, to earn his third save of the season.
"We played better baseball today." Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "I thought we were more present today. Braxton was outstanding. He kept them off balance and made some quality pitches. We had men on second and didn't execute hitting the ball behind the runner, kept grinding out and fought through the next two or three innings, and then Spikerman got a big hit. It was huge at that time."
Douthit did not allow a runner past second base through his six complete innings. The only runner to reach second – in the second inning – was thrown out trying to get to third base on a single to right field.
Bryce Madron fired a strike to
Anthony Mackenzie in time to make the tag.
Dakota Harris hit a leadoff double in the second inning, but three fly outs ended the frame. Mackenzie singled to start the fourth and made it to third base on a pair of groundouts, but OU broke through in the fifth inning.
Carmichael drew a one-out walk and, following a walk to
Sebastian Orduno, Pettis reached on a fielder's choice. Spikerman then pulled a two-out triple down the right field line into the corner, scoring both runners.
In the eighth,
Rocco Garza-Gongora drew a one-out walk, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored on Nicklaus' sacrifice fly to right center field.
