NORMAN — Junior first baseman
Anthony Mackenzie continued his torrid hitting to start the season, going 4 for 5 with an RBI, but the Oklahoma baseball team fell to Rider 6-3 Friday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Mackenzie is now 12 for 23 (.522) at the plate through the first six games of the year. Junior right fielder
Bryce Madron and freshman catcher
Easton Carmichael each notched two hits and Madron drove in a run. The Sooners (2-4) tallied 11 hits and drew seven walks, but left 14 runners on base.
OU and Rider (4-1) continue their series at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Park. The game time was moved up one hour to avoid potential inclement weather later in the afternoon.
Oklahoma struck first with a run in the third inning on an RBI groundout by sophomore center fielder
John Spikerman. Carmichael led off the inning with a double to the right field corner and scored on the groundout. Rider took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on a two-run single by catcher Brian Skettini and a base hit by third baseman Jack Winsett.
The Sooners pulled even in the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles by Mackenzie and Madron, both set up by a stolen base. Redshirt junior left fielder
Kendall Pettis started the rally with a one-out base hit and stole second. Mackenzie took second after his hit and scored on Madron's single. The OU first baseman has five steals in his last two games and leads the team with six stolen bases this season.
Rider took the lead again in seventh on a single by second baseman John Volpe, and scored two runs in the eighth on a base hit by first baseman Luke Lesch and an RBI groundout by third baseman Jack Winsett.
Oklahoma loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh on a Madron single and two walks, but was unable to bring in the tying run. In the ninth, OU loaded the bases again on a Madron leadoff walk, a two-out single by sophomore third baseman
Wallace Clark and an infield hit by redshirt senior designated hitter
Diego Muniz before a groundout ended the game.
Tickets for Saturday's game are available for only $5, and gates open at 11 a.m. The game will be streamed via SoonerVision on ESPN+ and broadcast locally on Sportstalk 99.3 FM/1400 AM KREF and Sportstalk1400.com.
