NORMAN — Junior first baseman
Anthony Mackenzie went 4 for 5 and
Easton Carmichael notched two hits and three RBIs to lead Oklahoma to a 7-2 win over Rider Saturday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Sooners (3-4) went ahead with three runs in the third inning and tacked on three more in the sixth to break open a 7-1 lead. Mackenzie singled in each of his first four at bats, knocking an RBI hit in the sixth, and is now 8 for 9 in the series and 16 for 28 (.571) this season. Carmichael gave OU the lead with his two-run single in the third and added an RBI triple to cap the sixth-inning scoring.
Junior
Will Carsten (1-0) struck out four batters and allowed a run on three hits in 5.0 innings to earn his first win at OU. Junior
Carson Pierce entered to begin the sixth, retired the first 11 batters he faced and earned a four-inning save, his first save as a Sooner. Rider starter Frank Doelling (1-1) went 2.2 innings and took the loss for the Broncs (4-2).
Oklahoma and Rider conclude the series with a rubber game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Junior shortstop
Dakota Harris went 2 for 4 and drove in a pair of runs, including an RBI double in the fourth that extended Oklahoma's lead to 4-1. Junior right fielder
Bryce Madron drew three walks, running his season total to 14 through seven games, and scored two runs. OU registered eight steals, including three by Mackenzie, who is 9 for 9 on the bases this season.
Sophomore third baseman
Wallace Clark drove in Oklahoma's first run of the third inning with a bases-loaded groundout that scored Mackenzie. Carmichael then bounded a single back up the middle to score Madron and Harris and put OU on top 3-1.
Harris roped a double into the left central alley in the fourth inning to score Mackenzie, who had led off the frame with a single and stolen second. Carsten retired the final two batters of the third inning and stranded two runners in the fourth before retiring the side in order in the fifth to end his outing.
Sophomore center fielder
John Spikerman legged out an infield single to start the sixth inning and stole both second and third base before scoring on Mackenzie's base hit to left center. Mackenzie then stole two bags and came home on Harris' sacrifice fly. Madron walked, stole second on a double steal with Mackenzie and scored when Carmichael drilled a triple to the deepest part of the park in right center.
Rider scored the first run of the game in the top of the third on a base hit by left fielder Scott Shaw, then added a run in the ninth on an RBI single by third baseman Jack Winsett.
