Sooners Fall to Abilene Christian in Extras

February 22, 2023 | Baseball

ARLINGTON, Texas — Junior shortstop Dakota Harris once again delivered a clutch hit, tying the game in the top of the ninth inning, but the Oklahoma baseball team ultimately fell to Abilene Christian 4-3 in 10 innings Wednesday evening at Globe Life Field.

The Sooners (2-3) trailed 3-0 after seven innings, but pulled within 3-2 in the eighth on a pinch-hit bases-loaded walk by fifth-year senior Diego Muniz and a sacrifice fly by freshman catcher Easton Carmichael. With two outs in the ninth inning and junior right fielder Bryce Madron on second, Harris drilled a single to right field. Madron raced home and evaded the tag up the line, swimming to touch the plate and tie the game.

The Wildcats (4-1) scored the winning run on a one-out single in the 10th inning by third baseman Maddox Miesse. ACU had plated runs in the second on a single by first baseman Jake Skaggs, a walk by Miesse in the fourth and a single by Miesse in the sixth.

"The difference in the game was execution," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "They executed and did a lot better job of two-strike hitting. I thought their pitchers threw pretty well. We just have to continue to work on two-strike hitting and work on playing offense."

Fifth-year senior Braden Carmichael got his first start of the season with younger brother Easton behind the plate. It was believed to be the first pitcher-catcher battery of brothers in OU baseball history. Braden struck out four and allowed one earned run over 3.2 innings. Easton singled in the fourth inning and drove in the run in the eighth.

Junior Jett Lodes notched a career-high four strikeouts in 2.1 innings, starting his relief outing with a strikeout to strand the bases loaded in the fourth. Junior Carter Campbell tossed 1.2 scoreless frames and junior Carson Atwood covered two-thirds of an inning.

In the ninth, Madron drew a two-out walk and stole second to set up Harris' game-tying single. Madron, who walked three times in the game, led off the eighth with an eight-pitch walk. Sophomore second baseman Jackson Nicklaus drew a one-out walk and sophomore third baseman Wallace Clark was hit by a pitch. After Muniz walked home a run, Carmichael hit a fly ball to center field allowing Nicklaus to score.

Junior first baseman Anthony Mackenzie singled twice and walked once in five plate appearances and stole three bases. The Sooners drew 10 walks and tallied five stolen bases in the game.

ACU reliever Max Huffling (1-0) pitched the final 2.2 innings and earned the win while OU reliever Gray Thomas (0-1) took the loss.

The Sooners return home to L. Dale Mitchell Park this weekend for a three-game series against Rider. Game times are 3 p.m. Friday, and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are available for only $5, and gates open two hours prior to first pitch. The games will be streamed via SoonerVision on ESPN+ and broadcast locally on Sportstalk 99.3 FM/1400 AM KREF and Sportstalk1400.com.
