Kale Davis struck out five batters over 5.0 innings and junior shortstop
Dakota Harris homered to lead the Oklahoma baseball team to a 5-2 win over California Baptist to open the 2023 season Friday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Davis (1-0), an Oklahoma City product, earned the win in his first appearance with the Sooners (1-0). He allowed only a run on two hits over his five frames. Sophomore
Aaron Calhoun was perfect in the ninth with two strikeouts to earn his first career save.
Harris' home run sparked a three-run fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie and put Oklahoma in front. The Sooners added an insurance run in the eighth inning on a double into the right center field gap by sophomore second baseman
Jackson Nicklaus.
"I thought we did a really great job offensively understanding the strike zone," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "Hats off to California Baptist, they have a really great club. I thought Kale was really good. The bullpen was outstanding and attacked the strike zone."
Each team scored a run in the first inning. The Lancers (0-1) plated a run in the top half on a sacrifice fly, and the Sooners tied it when sophomore third baseman
Wallace Clark drew a walk to bring home junior right fielder
Bryce Madron.
Following Harris' homer in the fourth inning, Clark walked and scored on an error off of freshman designated hitter
Rocco Garza-Gongora's single to left field. It was the first collegiate hit for Garza-Gongora, who later scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-1 lead.
After California Baptist cut it to 4-2 in the seventh inning on a solo home run by center fielder Julian Alvarez, the Sooners extended their lead back to three runs in the eighth inning. Nicklaus roped a double into the alley, bringing in junior first baseman
Anthony Mackenzie.
Davis retired nine straight batters after the first-inning run and finished his outing with a strikeout to strand runners on the corners in the fifth. Junior
Carter Campbell relieved him in the seventh and struck out three before giving way to Calhoun for the ninth. CBU starter Seth Mattox (0-1) took the loss.
The Sooners and Lancers continue the series at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Park. Tickets are available for only $5, and gates open at noon. The game will be televised via SoonerVision on ESPN+ and broadcast locally on Sportstalk 99.3 FM/1400 AM KREF and Sportstalk1400.com.
