NORMAN — Sophomore third baseman
Wallace Clark went 3 for 4 and junior first baseman
Anthony Mackenzie notched two hits and an RBI, but the Oklahoma baseball team fell to California Baptist 5-2 Saturday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Lancers (1-1) evened the series with the Sooners (1-1) after OU won the Friday opener by the same 5-2 margin. The teams will play a rubber game at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mitchell Park.
Mackenzie singled home redshirt junior left fielder
Kendall Pettis in the fifth inning to tie the game 2-2. CBU took the lead with three runs in the top of the eighth. OU loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth inning, but a strikeout ended the game.
"You look at the difference in the game, it's the balls that they put in play just over the infield and the balls that we didn't put into play over the infield," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "They got some hits, and they got the momentum. Jett (Lodes) was really good. We made big pitches and big moments in the game, and I thought
Will Carsten did a great job of doing that. We couldn't get anything started (on offense) because we were trying so hard to get a hit instead of just taking it pitch to pitch. You learn from those things. You can learn everything from a win, or a loss."
California Baptist scored a run in the top of the first inning on a base hit by designated hitter Josiah Chavez. OU tied it in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore second baseman
Jackson Nicklaus singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman designated hitter
Rocco Garza-Gongora. After a solo home run in the top of the fifth by CBU right fielder Dusty Garcia, Mackenzie knotted the game again with his RBI single.
Oklahoma attempted a final rally in the ninth after the Lancers took the lead in the eighth inning on an RBI triple, a single and a balk. Garza-Gongora drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth, sophomore center fielder
John Spikerman hit a two-out single and junior right fielder
Bryce Madron walked to load the bases.
In his first start for OU, junior
Will Carsten pitched 5.0 innings, struck out four batters and allowed two runs on eight hits. Junior
Jett Lodes pitched two scoreless innings and junior
Carson Pierce tossed one shutout frame. CBU reliever Brandon Downer (1-0) earned the win and Carson Olsen earned a save, while OU reliever
Gray Harrison (0-1) took the loss.
Tickets for Sunday's game are available for only $5, and gates open at noon. The game will be televised via SoonerVision on ESPN+ and broadcast locally on Sportstalk 99.3 FM/1400 AM KREF and Sportstalk1400.com.
