At Oklahoma, we want our fans to connect with our student-athletes on and off the mat.Ā As a result, we'll be doing a "Get to Know Our Sooner Wrestlers" segment in our newsletters. In this edition, you'll get to know
Giuseppe Hoose.Ā
Question: What's your background off the mat? Where are you from? What is your family like?
Answer: I was raised in Lakewood, New York by the best parents around, Joe and Johneen Hoose. My seven siblings, comprised of five brothers and two sisters, kept my childhood exciting and competitive. My family is full of love and energy they have made me who I am today.
Q: How did you get into wrestling?Ā Ā
A: When my oldest brother Tanner started wrestling, all my brothers followed suit. Another big factor was my buddy, Shane. I loved going to youth practices to compete against and hang out with my brothers and friends. My dad did a bit of wrestling in high school so he was always happy to lace up for practices. He has been a huge benefactor in my wrestling as well as life.
Q: What about wrestling makes you love the sport?Ā
A: There are many reasons I love wrestling. I was never good at it from a young age. The first tournament I ever won was in the tenth grade, seven years after starting. Yet, even as a kid I recognized the positive correlation between the work I put in and my progress. There is no plateau in wrestling. There is always an area I can improve or a new technique I can apply. Wrestling is a sport that anyone can reach high achievement in if they are willing to commit themselves to the process. Lastly, the lessons and life skills wrestling continues to give me are priceless. As Coach Kish says, "If you don't like the position, change it".Ā
Q: What are some of your biggest accomplishments on the mat?
A: Being given the opportunity to mentor my brothers and grow with teammates through wrestling.
Q: You transferred to Oklahoma from Buffalo. What led to that decision?Ā
A: I'm nothing but thankful for the opportunities and the relationships I built at Buffalo. UB was an awesome place to grow as a person and wrestler while getting my undergrad in environmental engineering. When I graduated, I knew a change would stimulate more growth in my wrestling. I chose the opportunity that I believe will help me reach my fullest potential. Thanks to Coach Marsden and Coach Kish for helping me through the process.
Q: What are you enjoying the most so far about wrestling for Coach Kish and his staff?Ā
A: I have always been a guy who will wrestle and train harder than his opponents. My coaches are wrestling savants and they have really helped the technical side of my game. They are also great guys to crack a joke with.
Q: What can OU fans expect when they see you on the mat?Ā
A: High intensity!
Q: What are your goals for the upcoming season?Ā
A: To focus on the process of sharpening and adding to my toolset every day. I believe that this will lead me to the top of the podium on March 23rd in Kansas City.
Q: Why should fans be excited about this new era of OU Wrestling?Ā
A: The culture this team is fostering will bring championships back to Norman.
Q: Alright, Giuseppe, now for some rapid-fire fun questions. Favorite Norman restaurant?Ā
