NORMAN — The Oklahoma soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with No. 15 SMU at John Crain Field in Norman on Sunday night.
The Sooners (1-2-2) battled back in the second half after trailing 1-0 at half. Senior Emma Hawkins opened her account in the 62nd minute when she scored the game-tying goal, her second goal in as many matches.
"I thought our performance was unbelievable," said OU head coach Mark Carr. "I thought we were the better team tonight, and that we played with passion, energy and intensity. We were the better team, created the most chances and deserved more than a draw."
The Mustangs (3-0-2) struck first in the match, finding the back of the net in the 27th minute courtesy of Jewel Boland. SMU played a ball just inside the 18-yard box and Boland floated one over the OU goalie for the first goal of the match.
The Sooners got five shots off in the first half, including a pair of opportunities on net in the 13th minute from Hawkins and freshman Ellie Geoffroy but both shots were saved by the veteran SMU keeper.
Physical play from both sides ensued in the second half with four yellow cards being assessed in the second 45, one of which to OU senior Bri Amos. Amos made her impact felt after her caution, assisting on Emma Hawkins' 62nd-minute goal to tie the match. After Amos' assist on the equalizer, the senior captain was sent off for a high challenge near midfield, resulting in the Sooners playing down a player for the final six minutes.
Teams continued their physical play through the final whistle, as Hawkins was tackled in the 18-yard box in the 90th minute but no call was made on the play. The game ended as a 1-1 draw as the Sooners notched their first point vs. a ranked opponent in Carr's tenure.
Up next, OU will make a five-match road swing starting with a trip to Tulsa to meet Tulsa (Sept. 8) and Oral Roberts (Sept. 11) on their home fields.
