WACO, Texas — The Oklahoma soccer team pushed its win streak to five games with a 2-0 victory over Baylor Friday night in the Big 12 opener.
"Obviously any win in Big 12 is difficult as there is talent from top to bottom," said head coach Mark Carr. "To get an away win, score two goals, get a shutout—all the credit goes to this team. I thought we created a ton of dangerous chances and were resilient in the right moments to bend and not break.
"It was a real team performance tonight, I'm really proud."
After opening weekend of conference play, Oklahoma (6-2-2, 1-0-0) is tied atop the Big 12 standings with in-state rival Oklahoma State.
Friday's win marked OU's first conference-opening win since 2016 and the Sooners 6-2-2 start is the best start through 10 games since the '16 season (7-2-1).
The team's seven-match unbeaten streak and five-game win streak is the longest of each category since the 2016 season when the Sooners won eight straight.
The Sooners were the aggressor in the match, firing 15 shots to Baylor's 12 including a 9-5 advantage in the first half.
Sophomore Ella Pappas opened the scoring with her first goal of the season. In the 34th minute, Pappas put a shot on frame that was deflected into the goal by a Baylor defender to put OU on top 1-0 into halftime.
The Bears (2-5-2, 0-1-0) battled in the second half, outshooting the Sooners 7-6 in the second 45 but only putting two looks on frame. Sophomore Leonie Weber put the game out of reach in the 83rd minute with a magnificent free kick goal.
After a foul on the Bears, Weber perfectly executed a set piece 15 yards upfield from the corner flag, bending the ball into the top right of the goal for her third goal of the season.
Nine Sooners took a shot in the match, led by senior Bri Amos and freshman Alexis Washington with three shots a piece, while Weber and redshirt freshman Kelis Brown took a pair.
Freshman keeper Olivia Ramey continued her tear in goal for OU, pushing her record as a starter to 5-0-0 including three shutouts. Friday's match was her second straight clean sheet, making four saves on the night.
After a five-game road swing, the Sooners make their return to Norman next Thursday, Sept. 29, as they welcome Iowa State (3-3-3, 0-0-1) to John Crain Field. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. CT start and can be seen via SoonerVision on ESPN+. Tickets for the match are available via SoonerSports.com/tickets or at the gate on game day.
