Sooners Storm Back, Win Sixth Straight

September 29, 2022 | Soccer

NORMAN — The Oklahoma soccer team extended its win streak to six games with a 3-1 come-from-behind win over Iowa State on Thursday at John Crain Field.

The Sooners (7-2-2, 2-0-0 Big 12) scored three goals in the final seven minutes of the game to secure three points and remain undefeated in conference play. OU sits atop the conference as the only undefeated team in the Big 12 with two wins and no losses or draws.

"That's three points," said OU head coach Mark Carr. "That's three points at the end of the day, and in the Big 12 that's important. A little disappointed in the first half, we weren't firing like we have been, but we talked about it at halftime and responded.

"Just proud of the character and mentality of this group. They've come so far in a year. A year ago we wouldn't have won this game and now we're knocking three goals in in the final minutes and winning the game. That's what it's about, that championship mentality and never-say-don't mentality. Just so proud."

OU's six-game win streak and eight-game unbeaten run is the longest of each category since the 2016 season and the Sooners' 2-0-0 start in conference play is the best start in league play since the 2016 team started 3-0-0.

The underclassmen led the way on the night with three goals and two assists coming from freshmen or sophomores.

Oklahoma saw plenty of opportunities in the first 45 with 12 shots in the first half, but it was the Cyclones (3-5-3, 0-2-1 Big 12) that took the lead in the 33rd minute on a goal from Mira Emma. After a deflected ball found Emma, she was able to capitalize in the box. It marked just the fourth goal OU goalkeeper Olivia Ramey has surrendered in her six starts in 2022.

The match turned to a defensive battle through the first 30 minutes of the second half before Oklahoma's offense provided a late surge in front of the home crowd.

Freshman Alexis Washington initiated the attack in the 84th minute and found fellow freshman Morganne Eikelbarner just inside the top of the 18-yard box where Eikelbarner knotted the match at 1-1. The frosh fired a shot low and into the bottom left of the goal past a diving ISU keeper for her third goal of her first-year campaign. It marked Washington's team-leading sixth assist of the season.

The Sooners kept the pressure on, with a free kick coming from sophomore Leonie Weber in the 87th minute. Weber's kick from the top of the box bounced off the crossbar where fellow sophomore Sheridan Michel was there to deflect the ball into the net and put the Sooners on top.

After an ISU foul in the box drawn by sophomore Bailey Wesco in the 90th minute, freshman Hali Hartman provided insurance with a penalty kick goal. Hartman converted the PK with a strike to the center of the goal for her first collegiate goal.

The final 30 seconds ticked off without an ISU counterattack and the Sooners notched their first win of the season at John Crain Field.

The Sooners outshot the Cyclones 24-9 on the night while ISU took seven corners to OU's four. Eleven Sooners took a shot on the night led by redshirt senior Bri Amos' three looks.

In goal, Ramey collected four saves and improved her record to 6-0-0 in her freshman season.

Oklahoma turns around to welcome Texas Tech (4-3-5, 0-1-2 Big 12) to Norman on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. The match can be seen on ESPN+ and tickets are still available via SoonerSports.com/tickets or at the gate on game day.
