OU Wins Third Straight Behind Dominant Second Half

September 15, 2022 | Soccer

NORMAN — The Oklahoma soccer team continued its hot streak, winning its third straight match by defeating East Tennessee State 4-1 on Thursday evening in Johnson City, Tenn.

OU is now unbeaten in their last five games, with wins in four of the five. The team's five-match unbeaten streak and three-game win streak is the longest of each category since the 2016 season when the Sooners won eight straight.

The Sooners (4-2-2) were powered by a dominant second half on Thursday, scoring all four goals in the second 45 and outshooting ETSU (2-3-2) in the match 24-7.

"Tonight was a good result for us," said OU head coach Mark Carr. "It took a while until we hit the back of the net, but once we scored we knew we would score more. We were also able to use the whole squad and share the minutes which was a positive.

"Now it's important we finish the non-conference schedule on a high note Sunday."

After taking 13 shots to ETSU's two in the first half, sophomore Leonie Weber broke the scoreless bout with a sensational corner kick in the 48th minute. Weber's ball into the box off the corner deflected off an ETSU defender into the back of the net.

Senior Emma Hawkins quickly made it 2-0 in the 51st with a left-footed strike from outside the 18-yard box, assisted by freshman Alexis Washington. It marked Hawkins' fourth goal in OU's last five games and Washington's team-leading fourth assist of the season.

Sophomore defender Sheridan Michel got in on the action in the 62nd minute, putting one in the bottom left of the goal with her left foot. After scoring her first collegiate goal in OU's win last Sunday, Michel made it back-to-back games with a goal.

OU continued its second-half explosion with its fourth goal of the match in the 67th minute courtesy of super senior Bri Amos and freshman Chelsea Wagner. The frosh played an exceptional ball from the outside left into the box to Amos who fired a no-look shot into the top right of the goal. It was Amos' fourth goal of the season, good for a tie of the team lead with Hawkins.

The Buccaneers got on the board with a late goal in the 84th minute to bring the final to 4-1, Sooners.

Freshman keeper Olivia Ramey collected her third win in as many starts, making three saves on the night. Amos led the Sooners with eight shots on the night, putting a pair on frame, while Hawkins fired four shots, putting a trio on goal. Eleven Sooners took a shot in the match with six putting a look on frame.

OU continues its road swing with its final non-conference match of the season at Murray State on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT. The game can be seen on ESPN+.
