The PROS staff provides psychoeducational testing that is aimed at gathering information about a student-athlete's intellectual, academic, personality, and mood functioning. The information gathered through the assessment process helps to guide the treatment process, including potential academic accommodations through the OUĀ Accessibility and Disability Resource Center. There are a number of benefits of psychological testing including:
- A description of strengths and areas for growth.
- Recommendations for accommodations and modifications to help the student-athlete be successful at work, in school, and in everyday life.
- Recommendations for support services, such as counseling.
- Recommendations for instructional strategies that will be of most help to the student-athlete
- Civil rights protections that ensure the student-athlete's right to accommodations at work and in school.
- Self-knowledge that may help the student-athlete begin to advocate for their individual needs at work and in school.
All incoming student-athletes, including transfers, complete an academic screener with PROS staff at the beginning of the academic year in order to identify potential learning disorders and to ensure continuity of accommodations while at OU. If warranted, student-athletes will return to the PROS office to complete further testing to ensure a complete picture of their learning needs.Ā
Ā
Alternatively, if a student-athlete is concerned about their intellectual, academic, personality, or mood functioning, they can speak with a PROS staff member about the value of formal testing. Psychological assessments often take approximately 5 hours and include self-report questionnaires and one-on-one testing with a PROS staff member. After testing is complete, the PROS staff member will review results with the student-athlete and discuss possible referrals and recommendations.
Potential areas of assessment and evaluation may include, but are not limited to:
- Learning disorders with difficulties in math, reading, or writing
- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Mood and personality disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety)
- Spelling incorrectly, or frequently spelling the same word differently in a single piece of writing
- Avoiding reading and writing tasks
- Difficulty with summarizing
- Trouble with open-ended questions on tests
- Weak memory skills
- Difficulty adjusting to new settings
- Working slowly
- Poor grasp of abstract concepts
- Paying too little attention to details or focusing on them too much
- Misreading information
Ā
* If a student-athlete notices that they regularly struggle with two or more of these common signs, they may be a learning candidate for a learning assessment.Ā
