Sooners Edged by Huskers in Lincoln

August 21, 2022 | Soccer

NORMAN — The Oklahoma soccer team dropped a tight match to Nebraska, 2-1, on Sunday in Lincoln, Neb.

The game was a tale of two halves as the Sooners (0-1-1) controlled much of the first half, pulling ahead in the 27th minute courtesy of a goal by senior Bri Amos assisted by freshman Alexis Washington.

The Huskers (1-1-0) battled back in the second half, scoring a pair of goals and outshooting the Sooners 16-2 in the second 45.

"I thought we did some good things today in the first half and was excited to go into the half up 1-0," said OU head coach Mark Carr. "The second half we were nowhere near the level we needed to be and were just outworked. We have to buy into the game plan and the team before we will hit the levels we want to accomplish.

"We'll take these lessons as we go into a tough game vs. Arkansas on Thursday."

Oklahoma came out aggressive, with sophomore Bailey Wesco nearly netting a goal in the first 10 minutes. On a well-played through ball by Washington, Wesco from just outside the six-yard box attempted to sneak one past the Husker keeper but was turned back.

The Sooners broke through in the 27th minute off the foot of Amos. Washington played the ball into the box where it deflected off a Nebraska defender and into the possession of Amos who buried her first goal of the season into the bottom right of the goal.

Senior keeper Makinzie Short was exceptional in her return to Lincoln since transferring from the Huskers to the Sooners in the offseason. Short made four saves in the first half, shutting down numerous Nebraska opportunities to keep the Sooners in front.

In the second half, Nebraska was on the attack, taking a trio of shots in the first 10 minutes of the period, all to be turned back by Short. The Huskers broke through with the equalizer in the 56th minute on a header by Eleanor Dale that found the top right of the goal.

The Huskers broke the tie in the 64th minute with a goal from Sadie Waite. After the first shot of the sequence was blocked by a Sooner defender, the ball found Waite who scored from just inside the 18-yard box to put Nebraska in front.

The Sooners saw one more opportunity on goal in the 74th minute by way of a through ball from freshman Ellie Geoffroy that found senior Emma Hawkins but Hawkins' look was saved by a diving Husker keeper. Amos took one more shot for OU in the 90th minute that was off target.

Short tallied a career-best 10 saves on the day, stopping six Husker shots in the second half.

Amos, Hawkins and junior Cailey England each took a pair of shots on the day with Amos, Hawkins and Wesco all putting looks on goal with Amos converting her shot for her first goal of the season and ninth of her career. The freshman Washington tallied her first career assist in her first start as a Sooner. Nineteen Sooners saw playing time in the match, with nine freshmen earning minutes.

The Huskers outpaced the Sooners in shots (22-7) and corners (7-0) in the contest, putting 12 of their looks on goal to OU's three.

The Sooners return home to John Crain Field in Norman on Thursday for a matchup vs. No. 8 Arkansas at 7 p.m. CT. Tickets are still available via SoonerSports.com/tickets and the game can be seen on SoonerVision on ESPN+.
