Three Sooners Podium at World Team Trials

GENEVA, Ohio – Three Oklahoma wrestlers earned podium finishes at the 2022 U20 and U23 World Team Trials this weekend.

Tate Picklo (3^rd), Jacob Butler (5^th) and Josh Heindselman (7^th) all wrestled their way to hardware in Geneva, Ohio, as some of the best in the country vied for a place on the United States' team for the 2022 UWW World Championships.

Picklo qualified for this tournament by going 5-2 to take fourth at the USMC U.S. Open in April and continued his good form this weekend. He won his first three matches, but fell one round short of wrestling for a chance to punch his ticket to Worlds. Four of the eight wins he has racked up this spring have come via tech fall.

In the U23 division, Jacob Butler made the deepest run of any Sooner by reaching the championship semi-finals thanks to five straight wins to open the tournament. Four of those first five came via tech fall to add to the sixteen total techs by Oklahoma wrestlers on the weekend.

He once again produced the upset of the weekend by taking down two-time All-American and reigning Pac-12 champion Kyle Parco of Arizona State. He then wrapped up his trip to Geneva with a first period pin of Minnesota's Drew Roberts in the fifth-place match.

Heavyweight Josh Heindselman battled through the consolation bracket to a seventh-place finish. After dropping his first-round bout, he rattled off six straight wins to make the podium. Ryder Wiese went 4-2 in the same division, but fell one round short of making a medal match.

Gabe Vidlak went 3-2 in the 61 kg bracket, highlighted by two tech fall victories. Jackson Oplotnik picked up his second win with a pin (2:40) of Bucknell's Darren Miller. He was one of three Sooners to win via fall (Butler, Wiese). Both of Alex Vislosky's wins came in tech falls.
