NORMAN – Oklahoma wrestling head coach
Lou Rosselli announced Friday the addition of transfer Wyatt Henson from the University of Iowa.
"Wyatt is a great addition to the Sooner family," Rosselli said. "He has great pedigree and we expect him to be a star here."
Henson comes to Norman with four remaining years of eligibility after spending a year as a redshirt in Iowa City. While competing unattached, he compiled a 7-2 record (18-2 including non-Division I competition) and won titles at the Luther, Lindenwood and Cyclone Opens.
His only two losses came in the Southern Scuffle against eventual Big 12 finalists Andrew Alirez of Northern Colorado and Allan Hart of Missouri. While there he picked up wins over CSU Bakersfield's 2021 NCAA qualifier Angelo Martinoni and Rider's MAC champion Quinn Kinner to take a fifth place finish.
A three-time individual state champion (Missouri 2019, Pennsylvania '20, '21) and two-time team state champion ('19, '21), he was tabbed as the No. 16 overall recruit in the class of 2021 by Intermat. In his final two years at Waynesburg Central, he amassed an 85-6 record with 28 pins and 13 tech falls.
The Henson family holds an impressive wrestling pedigree and is no stranger to Norman. Wyatt's father, Sammie, served as the head assistant coach for OU Wrestling from 2009-11 after serving as an Oklahoma RTC coach from 1997-2000. As a wrestler, Sammie Henson owns world gold and bronze medals and earned an Olympic silver medal in 2000 in addition to two NCAA championships from his time at Clemson.
