Ten Sooners Headed to World Team Trials

NORMAN – Ten members of the Oklahoma wrestling program will travel to Geneva, Ohio to compete in the 2022 Team USA U20 and U23 World Team Trials June 4-5.

Tate Picklo (86 kg) is set to represent the Sooners in the U20 Freestyle World Team Trials Challenge Tournament. He earned his spot thanks to a fourth-place finish at the USMC U.S. Open back in April. Three tech falls in five victories in Las Vegas marked an impressive return to the mat after nearly three months away.

Nine other Sooners have entered the U23 competition and are spread across five weight classes. The group is led by NCAA qualifiers Jacob Butler (70 kg), Willie McDougald (70 kg), and Josh Heindselman (125 kg). They are joined by Gabe Vidlak (61 kg), Jackson Oplotnik (65 kg), Alex Vislosky (70 kg), Jared Hill (74 kg), Carson Berryhill (92 kg) and Ryder Wiese (125 kg).

Hill and Wiese opened up their freestyle seasons at the U.S. Open. The rest of the group will see their first action of the spring.

Each wrestler has the opportunity to claim a spot on the U.S. team for this year's World Championships. In the U20 division, the champion in each weight class automatically qualifies to compete for Team USA at the 2022 UWW U20 World Championships in Sofia Bulgaria (Aug. 15-21). The top eight place winners who are eligible qualify for the Junior and 16U National Championships held in Fargo, N.D., on July 15-22.

The champions of the U23 division weight classes will go to the UWW U23 World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain, October 17-23, 2022, unless an eligible member of the Senior Team claims the spot.
