NORMAN – Oklahoma wrestling head coach
Lou Rosselli has announced the signing of sophomore transfer Gerrit Nijenhuis from Purdue.
Nijenhuis joins the Sooners after compiling an impressive resume in two seasons for the Boilermakers. He qualified for the NCAA tournament at both 165 (2021) and 174 pounds (2022) and was named Purdue's Most Outstanding Freshman in 2021.
"We are excited to have Gerrit as a part of Sooner nation," Rosselli said. "He is a hard-nosed, Pennsylvania wrestler and I look forward to working with him. He will be a good addition to the team."
The Intermat preseason poll has him ranked as the No. 18 165-pounder in the nation. He will have three years of eligibility remaining upon arriving in Norman.
The Canonsburg, Pa., native compiled an 18-15 record during the 2021-22 season, going 8-6 in dual action. He picked up eight ranked wins highlighted by an upset of the No. 9 seeded Michael O'Malley in the first round of the NCAA tournament. He placed ninth at the Big Ten Championship in back-to-back seasons for the Boilermakers.
As a true freshman in 2021, he led the team in both falls and reversals while racking up an 11-7 record. He rose as high as No. 18 in the national rankings after breaking into the starting lineup.
He was a two-time Pennsylvania state champion for Canon-McMillan High School, amassing a 47-0 record in his senior season. He also earned a runner-up finish at the 2019 Fargo Freestyle Junior Championships and took first at the 2019 Super 32 Tournament. Intermat tabbed him as the No. 12 overall recruit in the class of 2020.
