June 14, 2022 | Wrestling

NORMAN – University of Oklahoma wrestler Justin Thomas was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Men's At-Large First Team for his excellence on the mat and in the classroom, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Tuesday.

Thomas, a five-year starter for the Sooners at 157 pounds, maintained a 4.0 GPA and completed both a bachelor's degree in criminology and a master's degree in adult and higher education with an emphasis in intercollegiate athletics administration. He was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 At-Large Team last month.

The honor is the latest in a long list of academic accomplishments for the Huntington Beach, Calif., native. He has been named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team five times and the National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American Team four times.

On the mat, Thomas finished his OU wrestling career as a four-time NCAA qualifier and Big 12 tournament place-winner. He amassed a 94-52 record (49-21 in dual action) with 15 major decisions, three tech falls and five pins. He was twice named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week.

He is the fifth OU wrestler to receive the prestigious honor and the first since Kendric Maple was named to the first team in 2014. Current volunteer assistant coach and four-time All-American Sam Hazewinkel (2007, 1st), two-time NCAA qualifier David Kjeldgaard (2000, 2nd) and two-time Big 12 champion Kyle Terry (2010, 3rd) make up the rest of the list.

Thomas was the only Sooner and one of four Big 12 student-athletes honored this year. He was also one of the twenty members of the Division I team to boast a 4.0 GPA. The 15 members of the first team held an average GPA of 3.93.
