LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Tate Picklo fought his way to a fourth-place finish to earn qualification for the U20 World Team trials, highlighting the 2022 USMC U.S. Open for Oklahoma wrestling.
Picklo, who has not wrestled competitively since picking up an injury at the Rocky Mountain Open in February, impressed in his return to the mat. He cruised through the early rounds of the championship bracket to make it to the semifinals, winning three of his first four matches via tech fall before eventually falling in the third-place match.
He has now qualified for both the U20 Freestyle and Greco-Roman World Team trial tournaments. His last time competing in freestyle was in 2019.
"Tate did a nice job this weekend," said Oklahoma head coach Lou Rosselli. "He wrestled hard and will only continue to get better. He will be a lot of fun for Sooner fans to watch."
Elsewhere in the U20 Freestyle division, Alejandro Herrera-Rondon, Jared Hill and Ryder Wiese all put up strong showings in their first Team USA competition since starting their college careers.
Herrera-Rondon, wrestling at 70 kg, went 4-2 on the weekend including a 0:48 second tech fall in his opening match. He wrestled to three close wins in his other victories, fighting back from five points down in the first period to beat Robert Weston of Northern Iowa 11-9 in the second round. He was forced to medically withdraw from his final bout.
Going at 74 kg, Jared Hill also put up a 4-2 record in Las Vegas with a pin and a tech fall amongst his wins. Hill was recently named the Sooners' Most Improved Wrestler for the 2021-22 season by his coaches.
A smaller field at 125 kg meant Ryder Wiese only needed two wins to book a spot in the championship quarterfinals of his weight class. He took his opening two bouts, winning 12-4 and 5-0 decisions before dropping his next two matches.
Joey Prata was the only active Sooner in the senior freestyle division, competing at 57 kg. He won his first match in dominant fashion 12-4 over Cal Poly's Noah Cortez to advance to the quarterfinals, but lost his next two bouts to end his tournament.
