NORMAN – Joey Prata leads a group of five active Oklahoma wrestlers headed to Las Vegas for the 2022 USMC U.S. Open, April 29-30. Former NCAA national champion and two-time All-American for the Sooners Kendric Maple will also be competing, returning to the mat at the senior level for the first time since 2018.
Prata will be joined by OU freshmen Alejandro Herrera-Rondon (70kg), Jared Hill (74kg), Tate Picklo (86kg) and Ryder Wiese (125kg). Prata and Maple (65 kg), who will compete in the senior division, have been given the No. 4 and No. 6 seeds in their weight classes respectively. The other four are set for the under 20 junior division.
The U.S. Open serves as a qualifying event for the 2022 Senior World Team Trials Challenge and the U20 World Team Trials. The top seven finishers in the senior division qualify for the challenge tournament, the next step toward making the team for the world championships. Winners in the junior division will earn an automatic berth to the best-of-three wrestle-off series for a spot on the U20 World Team.
All six will wrestle in the freestyle divisions. The Sooners have no wrestlers entered in the Greco-Roman competitions.
Brackets will be released following weigh ins on Friday morning with matches scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. CT in the South Point Hotel & Casino Exhibit Hall. The entire event will be available for live stream on FloWrestling with live results posting to FloArena.
