Sooners Run-Rule Jayhawks, Sweep Series

April 24, 2022 | Baseball

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Oklahoma baseball team put an emphatic exclamation on its series sweep of Kansas with a 24-4 victory in seven innings Sunday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.

The Sooners (25-13, 7-5 Big 12) exploded for nine runs in the second inning – all with two outs – and led 19-4 after four frames. OU registered 14 hits and drew 11 walks in the game. For the weekend, Oklahoma totaled 46 runs on 46 hits and 26 walks, outscoring the Jayhawks (16-23, 2-10 Big 12) 46 to 12.

Blake Robertson notched six RBIs on two hits, including a three-run home run, to increase his series totals to 11 hits and 11 RBIs. Peyton Graham, who tallied 10 hits and eight RBIs in the series, had three hits and drove in four runs on Sunday. Tanner Tredaway led the team with four hits and recorded four RBIs in the game.

Nine players scored at least one run in the game, and four players scored four runs: Graham, Robertson, John Spikerman and Kendall Pettis. The top four batters in the OU lineup (Spikerman, Graham, Robertson, Tredaway) combined for 10 hits, 14 RBIs and 14 runs. Jimmy Crooks hit a three-run home run, Wallace Clark went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Hudson Polk had two RBIs.

"The players stuck to the game plan and that's really a tribute to what Coach (Clay) Van Hook and Coach (Reggie) Willits did," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "They separated balls from strikes, and we have to continue to do that. We need to continue to grow fundamentally on defense. It'll help us. Wallace made some great plays late the game there at third."

Chazz Martinez (3-3) struck out three batters over 2.1 innings in relief of starter Cade Horton. Colton Sundloff and Javier Ramos closed the game with a scoreless frame each.

Clark hit a two-out, two-run single in the top of the second inning to put Oklahoma on top and start the rally. The next four batters walked, extending the lead to 4-1. Tredaway then hit a two-run single (his second hit of the frame) and Crooks hit a three-run homer off the left field foul pole to make it 9-1. It was Crooks' third home run of the season.

In the third inning, Pettis squeezed home Sebastian Orduno, Graham doubled home a run, Robertson doubled home two runs and Tredaway made it 15-1 with an RBI single. Graham singled in another run in the fourth inning and Robertson hit a three-run shot to left field. It was his second homer of the season.

Graham scored on a wild pitch and Polk hit an RBI double in the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, Graham drove a sacrifice fly, Tredaway singled in a run and Pettis drew a bases-loaded walk to reach the final margin.

Kansas scored a run in the first inning on two infield singles and a double play, Maui Ahuna hit a two-run home run in the third inning and Tom Lichty hit an RBI double in the fourth inning.

Oklahoma travels to Tulsa on Tuesday to face Oral Roberts at 6 p.m. The Sooners will be home at L. Dale Mitchell Park next weekend (April 29-May 1) for a three-game series against Kansas State.
