TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma baseball team fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and was unable to muster enough offense to overcome the deficit in a 5-1 defeat at Oral Roberts Tuesday evening at J. L. Johnson Stadium.
The Sooners (25-14) registered four hits and scored their only run in the seventh inning on a wild pitch. The Golden Eagles (24-14) scored three runs in the first inning and single runs in the third and fourth frames.
Braden Carmichael (3-1) took the loss while AJ Archambo (4-1) earned the win.
Carter Campbell pitched a scoreless fifth inning,
Javier Ramos struck out two over 1.1 frames and
Carson Atwood retired two batters in the seventh.
Jaret Godman faced the minimum in the eighth, inducing a 6-4-3 double play and a groundout to second.
"If we make some defensive plays, it's a different game," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "When you do that and you're playing from behind, we just couldn't get the big hit with men in scoring position. I thought the pitching was good. It was the second time that Braden faced them and they kind of know who he is. He changed it up a little bit and got out of that (first) inning, and I thought that was great."
Oklahoma scored its only run in the top of the seventh inning when
Hudson Polk crossed the plate on a wild pitch. He walked to lead off the inning,
Wallace Clark singled and
Peyton Graham walked to load the bases. OU loaded the bases again after Polk scored but could not bring in another run.
The Sooners also had the bases loaded with two outs in the second inning after
Tanner Tredaway hit a leadoff double.
Peyton Graham singled in the third inning and
Brett Squires had a base hit in the fourth.
Oral Roberts scored three runs in the first inning on a bases-clearing triple by Holden Breeze. ORU added a run in the third on a solo home run by Jackson Loftin and a run in the fourth on a wild pitch.
Oklahoma returns home for a three-game Big 12 series this weekend against Kansas State at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Game times are 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
