NCAA Announces Conference Allocations

February 24, 2022 | Wrestling

NORMAN – The NCAA announced theĀ pre-allocation spots for the 2022 Division I Wrestling championship with the Big 12 Conference earningĀ 58 bids, the second most behind only the Big Ten.

The bids are spread across all 10 weight classes; the 174-pound class earned the most with eight. Two classes garnered seven spots (141 and 197), four classes took six (125, 133, 157 and 285) and the remaining three classes were given four spots (149, 165 and 184).Ā

This is a significant boost for the Big 12 which only received 45 spots last season.Ā The allocations determine the number of automatic qualifiers each conference will receive per weight class. For example, a wrestler who finishes inside the top-eight in the 174-pound weight class at the Big 12 tournament will automatically earn a spot in the field for the NCAA tournament.Ā Those who do not earn an automatic bid will have to hope for an at-large selection.

After all conference tournaments conclude, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will meet to select the remaining 43 at-large qualifiers, which will be announced on March 8, while brackets and seeding will be announced on NCAA.com at 6 p.m. on March 9. All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers.

The NCAA also released the updated coaches' rankings with seven Sooners making the cut. Joey PrataĀ (22), Willie McDougaldĀ (22), Justin Thomas (13) and Anthony MantanonaĀ (23) all moved up from their spots in last weeks' list. Tony Madrigal (31), Jake Woodley (12) and Josh Heindselman (29) all maintained their spots as well.Ā

These rankings are two of several criteria used to determine at-large bids and seeding for the NCAA tournament at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit Mar. 17-19.Ā The coaches' rankings are determined by a vote of 14 coaches in each weight class with two head coaches from each of the seven conferences. The final rankings that are released following conference tournaments will be what are used by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee.Ā

The RPI is a calculation that consists of three factors: winning percentage, opponent winning percentage (strength of schedule) and opponent's opponent winning percentage (opponent's strength of schedule). Only matches against Division I opponents at the designated weight class count towards the RPI and a wrestler needs to have wrestled 15 matches to be ranked.Ā

TheĀ No. 24Ā Sooners wrapped up their regular season and are now preparing to defend their Big 12 title at the Big 12 Championship which will be held MarchĀ 5-6 at the BOK Center in Tulsa.Ā
