February 17, 2022 | Wrestling

NORMAN – The Big 12 has announced its selections for the 2022 Academic All-Big 12 Wrestling Team with eight different Sooners honored for their excellence in the classroom. It is the second straight year the program has had eight earn the honor, tied for the most since head coach Lou Rosselli arrived in Norman in 2016.

Justin Thomas leads the way by earning a perfect 4.0 GPA, one of only nine in the conference to do so. Jake Boyd, Jacob Butler, Josh Heindselman, Mitch Moore, Jake Woodley and Zack Zeamer round out the first-team members with Tony Madrigal coming in on the second-team.

"I am extremely proud of our guys that made the Academic All-Big 12 Team," said Rosselli. "Education is a priority here and continues to be a part of our core values. It's great to see our team continue to get better on and off the mat."

The Sooners now have 126 all-time Academic All-Big 12 honorees, the second most in the conference's history.

Justin Thomas' inclusion marks his fifth consecutive season being named among those honored, all five times he was a member of the first-team. It is his second straight season earning the 4.0 distinction.

Redshirt senior All-American Jake Woodley was selected for the fourth straight year. Redshirt senior Jake Boyd, redshirt juniors Jacob Butler and Zack Zeamer, and redshirt sophomore Josh Heindselman claimed their second career first-team honors. It is Tony Madrigal's second consecutive season on the second-team. Senior Mitch Moore makes his first appearance on the Academic team.

A total of 124 student-athletes have been recognized on the 2022 Academic All-Big 12 Wrestling Team, 99 on the first-team and 25 on the second. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
