Sooners Earn Jumpman Invitational Victory Over Florida
December 20, 2022 | Men's Basketball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Grant Sherfield led the Sooners with 22 points and Oklahoma men's basketball (9-3, 0-0 Big 12) beat Florida (7-5, 0-0 SEC) in the first men's game of the inaugural Jumpman Invitational on Tuesday night at Spectrum Center.
Sherfield finished 7 of 13 from the field and 4 of 6 from deep. The Fort Worth, Texas, product recorded four of the Sooners' seven 3-pointers. Tanner Groves tallied his second double-double of the season, recording 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jalen Hill led the Sooners on the glass and wrangled 12 boards. Milos Uzan dished out a team-high five assists and tallied nine rebounds.
Oklahoma entered the break down two and rallied from an 11-point deficit with seven minutes left in the half. Groves capped the rally with a 3-pointer and the Sooners finished the final five minutes on a 9-2 run.
"I was excited for the guys on how tough they played," said Oklahoma head men's basketball coach Porter Moser. "I thought they played really tough defense. We got down 11 and showed perseverance, fighting back to cut it to two. We had some foul trouble. I told Grant right when he got his second foul, I am playing you and I am not going to sit you the rest of the half. He got back in there and we cut it to two."
Out of the break, the two programs battled back and forth.
Jacob Groves buried a three within the first four minutes of the half, giving the Sooners their first lead of the contest. Florida's Kyle Lofton tied it up the next time down the court and Milos Uzan broke the tie on a driving layup.
Florida went on a quick 4-point spurt and recaptured the lead after a pair of Colin Castleton free throws with 13:18 left.
Shefield drained a 3-pointer on the next possession and Oklahoma captured the lead for good. Otega Oweh buried a pair of free throws before Florida brought the OU advantage back to one.
Oklahoma outscored Florida 15-10 over the final 10 minutes and Sherfield sealed the victory at the charity stripe, making four at the line over the final minute.
