Sooners Fall to KU in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Oklahoma soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Kansas on Thursday night in Lawrence.

OU (7-4-3, 2-2-1 Big 12) was the aggressor in the match, finishing with a 20-13 shot advantage over the Jayhawks (8-7-1, 1-4-1), but could only find the back of the net once courtesy of senior Emma Hawkins.

"Disappointing result tonight and a performance that was not near our standard here at OU," said OU head coach Mark Carr. "We were second best in a lot of areas and not the norm for us given how we have been performing. We will have to learn quickly and be ready for KSU on Sunday."

Hawkins tallied her team-leading sixth goal of season in the 19th minute following a foul in the box drawn by sophomore Muriel Kroflin. Hawkins converted the penalty kick, firing a strike to the bottom right of the net to give the Sooners the early lead.

Kansas responded with a pair of quick goals in the 23rd and 25th minute. After a save from OU GK Olivia Ramey, OU's clearance attempt was deflected back to a Jayhawk who was able to sneak the ball past Ramey into the bottom of the net to equalize the match. Two minutes later, on what was intended as a cross into the box, the ball sailed just over the OU backline and into the top left of the goal.

The Jayhawks added to their lead with a goal off a free kick in the 54th minute.

OU showed fight in the final 20 minutes, taking a handful of shots highlighted by what looked to be a goal from senior Bri Amos but was negated due to a close offsides call.

In the 76th minute, junior Cailey England saw another good look for the Sooners, firing a ball from the top left of the 18-yard box that had to be saved by the KU keeper.

OU finished with a 20-13 shot advantage and 4-1 corner kick differential. Kroflin led OU with four shots in the match, while Hawkins and freshman Michelle Pak each took a trio of shots. Ramey made one save on the night, while OU's offense made the KU keeper make nine saves.

The Sooners return to the pitch Sunday back in Kansas for a matchup with Kansas State in Manhattan. First touch is set for 1 p.m. CT and the match can be seen on ESPN+.
