NORMAN ā The Oklahoma volleyball team returns to the friendly confines of McCasland Field House Tuesday, Sept. 14, for a midweek matchup with Abilene Christian before returning to the road to face SMU on Thursday, Sept. 16, in Dallas, Texas.
Tuesday's match against Abilene Christian will begin at 5 p.m. CT and air on Bally Sports Oklahoma. Thursday's match at SMU will begin at 7 p.m. and can be viewed on ESPN+.
WEEKEND STORYLINES
BACK IN OUR HOUSE
The Sooners are back in Norman for the first time since opening weekend on Tuesday. The Sooners are 0-3 inside McCasland Field House after facing a tough field at the OU Invitational. OU will look to get back to defending its home court against Abilene Christian.
ROAD WARRIORS
Thursday's road match against SMU will mark the seventh road match of the month of September for the Sooners. OU will have two more road matches to close out the month when they open Big 12 play at West Virginia Sept. 24. Of the 10 matches in the month of September on the Sooners' calendar, OU will have played nine of them away from Norman. Currently, the Sooners are 4-2 away from home this season.
LAST TIME OUT
The Sooners are coming off a 1-2 weekend at the Georgia Tech Classic. OU picked up a thrilling five-set win over Indiana before falling to Mississippi State and No. 21 Georgia Tech, both in four sets.
Against Indiana, two players earned career-highs as the Sooners took down Indiana in a five-set thriller, 22-25, 25-22, 15-25, 25-18, 15-13.
Megan Wilson led all players with 22 kills, her first game of 20-plus kills this season. Wilson also added two service aces, three digs and three blocks.
Kristen Birmingham picked up a career best 11 kills on a .476 clip while also getting in on five blocks.
Paige Anderson chipped in 11 kills of her own on a .368 clip and assisted on six blocks.Ā
The Sooners saw their four-match winning streak come to an end Friday evening as they fell to Mississippi 25-18, 25-16, 25-27, 25-14. Anderson led the offensive attack with 14 kills on a .478 clip. Wilson notched 10 kills to go with three digs and two blocks.
Savannah Davison and Carrington each chipped in seven kills of their own. Dunn notched her second 40-assist game of the weekend with 40.
Callie Kemohah tallied a career-high 29 digs.
Georgia Tech took the final match of the weekend, 27-29, 25-14, 25-18, 25-22. Wilson and
Savannah Davison led the offensive attack with 18 and 15 kills, respectively. Wilson also chipped in a team-best three service aces.
Peyton Dunn picked up 36 assists to go with four kills and seven digs. Kemohah notched 13 digs on the day along with four assists and two service aces.
Sam Anthony added seven digs of her own.
BLOCK PARTY
The Sooners currently rank fifth in the Big 12 in blocks per set, averaging 2.62. OU ranks first, however, in total blocks with 97. OU has posted double-digit blocks in all but two matches with a season-high 14.0 against Air Force.
Paige Anderson is ranked in the top 10 in the conference. Anderson's 1.19 blocks per set rank 10
th in the league and her 43 total blocks are tied for first in the conference.
WONDERFUL WILSON
Freshman outside hitter
Megan Wilson has been on a tear and currently ranks second in the league with 4.14 kills/set. Wilson has tallied 15 or more kills in all but one match this season with a career high of 22.
FRESHMAN IMPACT
All five of OU's freshmen saw action during opening weekend, with four of five starting at least one match.
Peyton Dunn and
Callie Kemohah started all three matches while
Kristen Birmingham and
Megan Wilson each started one. Wilson led the way with 53 kills across three matches, including a career-high 19 in the final two matches of the weekend. She also tallied four service aces and five blocks. Dunn recorded 128 assists over the weekend to go with 29 digs, nine kills and six blocks. Kemohah notched 58 digs and 13 assists as the starting libero. The Lucas, Texas, native tallied two performances of 20-plus digs. Birmingham chipped in 19 kills with eight blocks on the weekend while also tallying five digs.
Callie Cogdill made her collegiate debut against Lipscomb where she recorded one dig.
SCOUTING ABILENE CHRISTIAN
Abilene Christian enters Tuesday's match with a 5-4 overall record. The Wildcats are coming off a 3-0 loss to North Texas on Saturday. The Wildcats and Sooners share a common opponent in Texas Tech, who defeated ACU 3-0.Lindsey Toney leads the Wildcats with 147 kills and a 4.74 kills/set mark. Jada Birkel ranks second with 91 kills and a 2.94 kills/set average. Madison Rohre leads the team with 330 assists for a 10.65 assists/set average. Madison Lawler leads the team in digs at 127.
SCOUTING SMU
SMU is 3-5 on the year with wins over Pacific, Stephen F. Austin and Omaha. The Mustangs have played just three matches over three sets and have one five set victory this season.Hannah Jacobs leads the Mustangs with 86 kills and 3.07 kills/set. Rachel Woulfe ranks second on the team with 64 kills and 2.29 kills/set. Lily Heim leads the team with 252 assists. Makayla Miller and Bria' Merchant rank first and second in digs with 85 and 83, respectively.
QUICK HITTERS
- The Sooners have played three five-set matches, four four-set matches and two three-set matches this season. OU is 1-2 in five set matches, 1-3 in four-set matches and 2-0 in three-set matches.
- Four of OU's regular season opponents earned berths in the 2020 NCAA Tournament, including Georgia Tech, Lipscomb and conference foes Baylor and Texas. Texas claimed a runner-up finish in the national title match in 2020.
- The Sooners will be on the road for nine of 10 matches in the month of September. The only home match of the month will be Tuesday's match against ACU. Ā
UP NEXT
The Sooners will have the weekend off and begin conference play at West Virginia on Sept. 24 and 25. OU will face Kansas State on Oct. 1-2 at home for the first home conference matches of the season.
