CORALVILLE, Iowa – A trio of Oklahoma wrestlers, wrestling for the Oklahoma Regional Training Center, finished as national runners-up at UWW Junior and Senior Nationals over the weekend in Coralville, Iowa, bringing the total number of Sooners that will compete at World Team Trials to four.

Dom Demas, Darrien Roberts and Josh Heindselman all finished second in their respective weight class, as Demas punched his ticket to World Team Trials. Jake Boyd finished in fourth at 97 kg in the senior division to secure a chance to compete for Team USA.

Demas and Boyd will join Heindselman and 2021 All-American Jake Woodley at team trials, as the latter two won national championships at UWW Junior Nationals in November 2020.

Overall, a dozen Sooners competed over the weekend in Iowa.

Demas outscored opponents 32-1 through the semifinals of the 65 kg senior men's freestyle bracket, knocking off Iowa's Pat Lugo 4-1 in the semi to earn a shot at NCAA runner-up Jaydin Eierman of Iowa in the final. The Oklahoma All-American landed an early inside trip to take a 2-0 lead on the Hawkeye but wasn't able to hold off the fellow All-American and fell 8-4.

Roberts, competing in the 86 kg junior men's freestyle bracket, outscored his foes 31-13 to earn a showdown with Mizzou freshman Colton Hawks in a best-of-three final. The Oklahoma sophomore narrowly dropped the first match 6-5 and held a 4-0 lead in the second match before getting rolled through and pinned to finish with the silver.

Heindselman, who looked to defend his junior national title, was one of the most dominant wrestlers at the tournament, running through the 125 kg junior men's freestyle bracket to the final. The Sooner heavyweight rattled off four-straight tech falls, outscoring opponents 43-1 en route to the finals. The OU freshman claimed the first match in the best-of-three series over Air Force's Wyatt Hendrickson, 17-8. In the second match, Heindselman took an 8-6 lead into the final seconds before Hendrickson secured a late takedown and turn to claim a 10-8 win to prolong the series. Heindselman was downed 11-0 in the winner-take-all final match to finish in second.

Boyd, who entered the weekend as the No. 1 seed at 97 kg, dropped his opening match 10-6 to Sam Mitchell to move into the consolation bracket. For the Sooner, all he would need is a top-five finish to clinch a team trials' spot. He would rattle off four consecutive shutouts, including a 9-0 win in the revenge match with Mitchell. Boyd would drop the third-place bout, 5-3, to grab fourth and a spot at the trials.

Antonio George went on a run in the 65 kg junior freestyle bracket, making it to the round of 16 before being downed by Josh Saunders. He finished 3-2 on the weekend. Joining George in the 65 kg bracket was Caleb Tanner, who went 0-2.

Cam Picklo advanced into the quarterfinals at 70 kg, outscoring opponents 32-10 in the three rounds prior. The Mustang, Okla., product finished the weekend 3-2.

Willie McDougald (70 kg) won his opening bout 11-1 but was downed in the next round before holding off teammate Jackson Oplotnik in the consolation bracket and then losing his next match to finish 1-2. Oplotnik went 1-2 at the tournament.

Thatcher Hall accumulated a 2-2 record at 74 kgs, and teammate Alex Vislosky went 0-2 in the same class.

Talon Borror opened junior nationals with a pair of wins in the 86 kg freestyle division before dropping an 11-0 decision to the eventual champion. He won his first consolation match 18-8 before dropping his match in the consolation round of eight, 12-1, to end his tournament.

The four wrestlers who have earned spots at World Team Trials will compete for a spot on Team USA on September 3-5 at a site to be announced.
