No. 1 Sooners Win Two in Waco

April 27, 2021 | Softball

WACO, Texas — The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team (39-1, 15-0) swept through its doubleheader with Baylor in Waco Tuesday night. The Sooners beat the Bears 7-1 in game one before an 11-0 shutout in six innings in game two.

Oklahoma outscored Baylor 18-1 on the night and collected its NCAA-best 21st shutout and 29th run-rule of the season in the nightcap.

Game One: OU 7, Baylor 1

After Baylor put up the first run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Taylor Ellis, OU outscored the Bears 7-0 the remainder of the game.

Oklahoma's defense made plays to stop a Baylor scoring threat in the third inning. On back-to-back plays, OU catcher Kinzie Hansen registered tag outs at home. The first came as second baseman Tiare Jennings rifled a ball back to Hansen for the tag, before a relay from Jayda Coleman to Grace Lyons back to Hansen recorded the final out of the inning and left another runner on base.

In the top of the fourth, following a single from the freshman Coleman, an error that allowed senior Taylon Snow to reach base and a walk to senior Jana Johns, redshirt senior Nicole Mendes blasted her second career grand slam. The deep shot to left was OU's sixth grand slam of the season.

The Sooners didn't look back after taking the lead on Mendes' blast. Senior Jocelyn Alo belted her nation-leading 25th home run to lead off the fifth inning before Tiare Jennings hit the 22nd home run of her freshman campaign in the sixth.

The Sooners were outhit for just the third time of 2021 as the Bears registered five hits to OU's four. Three of the four Sooner hits were home runs.

Redshirt senior Giselle Juarez collected her team-best 15th win of the season in a complete-game performance. Juarez struck out six and allowed just the one run while scattering five Baylor hits to go with six strikeouts and one walk.

Game Two: OU 11, Baylor 0 (6 innings)

Oklahoma turned around approximately 30 minutes after the game-one victory for a shutout, run-rule win in game two. It marked OU's fourth shutout in its last five games.

Reigning Big 12 Pitcher of the Week Shannon Saile was exceptional in her 4.0 innings pitched. Saile retired the first nine Baylor batters and recorded her 12th win of the year, allowing no runs to just two hits, one walk while striking out six.

Oklahoma's offense did not hit a home run in the nightcap, just the third game this season the Sooners have not gone yard. OU found other ways to get runners across, scoring at least two runs in four of the six innings of the game.

Senior captain Lynnsie Elam opened the scoring on an RBI single in the top of the first, prior to a sac-fly RBI from sophomore Kinzie Hansen. Three more Sooners crossed home in the second courtesy of RBI singles from Jennings and Alo and a sacrifice bunt RBI from Lyons.

A pair of RBI groundouts in the third put two more OU runs on the board as Coleman and sophomore Mackenzie Donihoo added on to the Sooners lead.

Four more runs in the sixth closed the OU scoring and brought the game into run-rule territory. After Elam batted in pinch runner Kinsey Koeltzow and sophomore Rylie Boone brought in Lyons, as Lyons avoided the tag at home, Johns ripped a two-RBI single through the left side to make it 11-0, OU.

Sophomore Olivia Rains (1.0 IP) and freshman Nicole May (1.0) combined to close the shutout for the Oklahoma pitching staff with Rains retiring the three batters she faced in the fifth and May putting the Bears down in order while striking out one in the sixth.

Alo paced the Sooners in the box, finishing 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored, while Elam and Johns both brought in a pair. Eight Sooners recorded hits in the game with nine registering RBIs.

With the series sweep, OU has now won 57 consecutive Big 12 regular season games and 59 straight Big 12 conference series.

Oklahoma takes the weekend off after playing a combined seven games in the past seven days. The Sooners will look ahead to the final week of the regular season, May 3-9, with a midweek contest at Wichita State May 4 at 6 p.m. prior to the Bedlam series in Stillwater, May 7-9.
