NORMAN – No. 1 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team advances to the 2021 NCAA Finals after finishing in the top three at the first session of the Qualifying meet. Finals will be held Saturday, April 17 at 7 p.m. CT in Minneapolis, Minn. 

NOTES AND NUMBERS FOR NCAAS

THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

No. 1 Oklahoma eyes its 13th national title in program history as it heads into the 2021 NCAA Finals, hosted by the University of Minnesota. Friday consisted of two qualifying sessions, at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. CT. The top three teams from each session will advance to Saturday's finals, as well as the top three all-around competitors and individual competitors not on a qualifying team. 

The Sooners competed in the first session Friday against No. 4 Nebraska, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 8 Illinois, No. 9 Navy and No. 12 William & Mary in the first session. The Sooners finished with a score of 406.190 and competed against No. 4 Nebraska (408.623), No. 5 Ohio State (394.956), No. 8 Illinois (400.721), No. 9 Navy (390.990) and No. 12 William & Mary (371.256).

Session II will consist of No. 2 Michigan, No. 3 Stanford, No. 6 Penn State, No 7. Iowa, No. 10 Minnesota and No. 12 Cal. The top three scoring teams will advance to the NCAA Finals to join Oklahoma, Nebraska and Illinois. 

GOING FOR HISTORY

The Sooners have won twelve NCAA men's gymnastics championships with their most recent title coming in 2018, part of a run of four straight national titles under head coach Mark Williams.

With one more national title, OU head coach Mark Williams would top the coaching charts with a record 10 titles as head coach.

Gaining the title this weekend, the Sooners would stand atop NCAA men's gymnastics history with a record 13 national titles, breaking the tie with Penn State for the most national titles.

SOONERS NO. 1 IN CGA STANDINGS

After the regular season and conference championships of NCAA men's gymnastics competition, Oklahoma continues to hold the top spot in the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) standings. The No. 1 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team won its ninth straight Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference title Saturday, April 3, beating No. 3 Stanford (411.550), No. 11 Cal (386.950) and No. 14 Air Force (388.350) with a score of 412.750 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Sooners hold the top team average (412.300) and hold a top three spot in five of six events. The Sooners rank first on floor exercise (70.788), second on still rings (68.313), vault (72.238), parallel bars (68.813) and high bar (66.150) and fourth on pommel horse (66.038). 

Individually, one Sooner holds a top 10 spots in the all-around rankings, held by junior Spencer Goodell's 80.575, which is good for fifth. 

On floor exercise, Sooners hold two of the top five spots in the CGA standings. Senior Gage Dyer ranks No. 1 with a 14.688. Junior Morgan Seyler ranks No. 2 at 14.513 NQA.

The Sooners hold two spots in the top 10 on pommel horse. Junior Vitaliy Guimaraes leads the team with a 13.663, good for fourth place. Freshman Zach Nunez holds the eight spot with a 13.600 NQA.

On still rings, the Sooners put up three in the top 10. Senior Matt Wenske leads the way with his 13.900 average that ranks fifth overall. With a 13.700, Guimaraes holds eighth, and junior Spencer Goodell follows right behind him in ninth with a 13.688.

The Sooners have two in the top-10 on vault. Senior Mason Menser is ranked sixth in the nation with a 14.600. Dyer holds the eight spot with a 14.538 vault NQA, and Wenske sits in the 12 spot with a 14.513.

Oklahoma put three gymnasts in the top 10 in the parallel bars ranks following week 12. Wenske (14.100) ranks fourth, while sophomore Alan Camillus (13.750) holds sixth. Sophomore Cesar Gracia (13.713) follows in eighth and Goodell (13.600) sits in 11th.

On the last event, high bar, two Sooners hold top-ten spots. Guimaraes holds the No. 2 spot with a 13.650 average and sophomore Jack Freeman finds himself in fourth with a 13.513.

LAST TIME OUT

The Sooners won three events as a team and placed in the top five on four events.

The team started the meet on floor and put up a 68.665. Senior Gage Dyer led the team with a score of 14.733, which put him in second place overall. 

In the second rotation, the team posted a total of 63.631 on pommel horse. Freshman Zach Nunez put up a 13.333 to lead the team and was closely followed by Junior Vitaliy Guimaraes with a 13.233.

The team tallied a 68.932 on still rings in the third rotation of the day, giving them the event title. Spencer Goodell set a new career-best score of 14.033, which also crowned him with the event title. Senior Matt Wenske and Guimaraes followed in second and third overall with respective scores of 13.900 and 13.766.

In the fourth rotation, the Sooners produced a 71.999 on vault, good for the highest team score of the day for the Sooners and another team event title. Dyer led the team with a 14.600, which put him in fifth overall. Sophomore Josh Corona and Junior Morgan Seyler both produced 14.500s to help the team win the event. 

OU moved to parallel bars for the fifth rotation of the day. The team tallied a 66.265, giving the Sooners their third event title. Tying for second overall, Goodell scored a 13.600. Guimaraes and Wenske tied each other for fourth with a score of 13.533.

The Sooners closed the meet with a 66.698 on high bar and were paced by sophomore Cesar Gracia. The sophomore put up a 13.600 and was closely followed by Nunez with a 13.466, good for a career high score. 

The Sooners will compete in the NCAA Finals Saturday, April 17 at 7 p.m. CT in Minneapolis, Minn. They will be joined by Nebraska, Illinois and the three best-scoring teams from the second session of the NCAA Qualifying meet tonight at 7 p.m.

The meet will be broadcasted on Big 10 Network.
