NORMAN - Despite equalizing in the 77th minute, the Oklahoma soccer team fell short to the Baylor Bears in a 2-1 result at John Crain Field on Saturday afternoon.
"I thought it was a competitive match and that it was really back and forth," head coach
Mark Carr said. "We had a few good chances in the first half, and obviously Baylor is a really dangerous team, and they've had a lot of success. With all the adversity we've faced in the last six months of the year, for this team to respond shows the character and fight that they have."
The Sooners played the Bears equal in the first half, with Carr's team securing the first half's best chance in the seventh minute when
Cailey England played a cross to an open
Jazzy Richards in the box who was unable to get a foot on it. The Bears, however, did outshoot Oklahoma in the first half 12-4. Sophomore goalkeeper
Leah Radow tallied six of her career-high seven saves in the first 45 minutes, keeping the Sooners locked in a battle.
"Leah's incredible and has really taken advantage of an opportunity," Carr said. "Her growth through the spring over four or five games, I mean she's made a bunch of saves, and her development has been incredible. The two goals allowed today are a collective effort with us not getting pressure on the ball."
The sophomore has tallied 21 saves in five matches this spring.
"Ultimately, there are always lessons to learn, and there are always things that I'm improving on," Radow said. "Maryse (Bard-Martel) is one of the greatest coaches that I've ever had, and we're always planning out what I can do to be successful each week. We want to keep the ball out of the back of the net, but I know that today was a step in the right direction."
The pace of the match ramped up in the second half with both sides creating quality chances in front of the box, but the first breakthrough came in the 56th minute when BU's leading scorer, Taylor Moon, found an angle on net off a deflection to put the Bears up 1-0.
"Moon is a really talented player for them, and we didn't do a good enough job handling her pace and skill," Carr added. "We changed some things up in the second half to contain her more, but she found the ball off a deflection and made us pay."
The Sooners would find their equalizer in the 77th minute when the OU backline ended a Baylor counter in the defensive third, which led to a pass to Sakky Yoshida, who played a through ball to
Bri Amos. The junior from Tulsa would win her one-on-one battle with the Baylor keeper with her left foot and tie the game at one apiece.
"For our team to respond is big," Carr commented. "A great ball from Sakky and then Bri's one-on-one with the keeper and she buries it on the ground...I'm really happy to get a goal and get on the scoresheet."
Oklahoma tried to keep the ball outside of its 18-yard box to push the match to overtime, but Ally Henderson took a 20-yard strike in the 84th minute that proved to be the match's difference, securing a 2-1 victory for the Bears.
The Sooners will wrap up their season on April 17, when they host Kansas State at 1 p.m.
