SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Oklahoma baseball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end with a 5-2 defeat at Texas State Wednesday evening at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Sooners (12-8) scored a run in the fifth inning on a base hit by catcher
Jimmy Crooks to cut the deficit to 2-1, and scored in the ninth inning on a triple by first baseman
Tyler Hardman to make it 5-2, but the late rally fell short. The Bobcats (9-13) scored two runs in the fourth inning, then added a solo home run in the fifth and a two-run homer in the seventh. OU out-hit Texas State 10 to 6 but left 13 runners on base in the game.
"They took the momentum, then we kind of gathered it back and then we gave up a big two-run homer that hurt us a little bit," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "We just have to do a better job of scoring the runs when we get the runners on base. It's kind of hard sometimes when they're on base with two outs, as opposed to one out. All-in-all I think the pitchers did a good job and the hitters did a good job, and we just have to continue to focus on the little things. You're going to win and lose games and that's part of it. We'll grow from it. I'm looking forward to the opportunity on Friday."
Left fielder
Kendall Pettis, who went 2 for 3 and scored both of OU's runs, singled to left field with one out in the fifth inning. He scored all the way from first base on a hit-and-run when Crooks lined a two-out single to right center field to make it a 2-1 game. He led off the ninth with a base hit and scored on Hardman's triple to the wall in right field.
Texas State took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a triple by designated hitter Bryce Bonner and a groundout by third baseman Cole Coffey. Right fielder Jose Gonzalez hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and shortstop Justin Thompson hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to make the score 5-1.
Javier Ramos pitched 2.0 scoreless innings at the start and
Ben Abram (1-1) followed with two more innings of work.
Jaret Godman (1.1 innings),
Ledgend Smith (1.0 inning) and
Carson Carter (1.2 innings) combined for the remaining four frames. OU pitchers totaled 12 strikeouts in the game. Texas State starter Zeke Wood (2-1) allowed one run over 5.0 innings in the win.
Oklahoma will remain on the road to open Big 12 conference play this weekend at Texas. Game times are 7 p.m. Friday, 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. in Austin, Texas.
