Soccer Opens Spring at North Texas

NORMAN — The Oklahoma soccer team travels to Denton, Texas, on Thursday to open its spring season with a match at defending C-USA champion North Texas (2-0-0). The first touch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the North Texas Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.

Oklahoma (0-8-1) is coming off a 6-0 exhibition win over Central Oklahoma, where four Sooners found the back of the net, including Jazzy Richards, who scored twice in her return to the team.

"I'm looking forward to our game on Thursday night," Carr said. "We know that we have to execute on our highest level in terms of our performance. We've been working very hard all week on some areas from our opening match, and our goal is to show that on Thursday night. It's about our performance and execution with intensity, effort and energy."

The match is accessible on a pass-list only basis and streaming information will be announced on game day.

MATCH BASICS

The Sooners chase their first win of the season in their first out-of-conference match of Thursday. Oklahoma, led by first-year head coach Mark Carr, battled with multiple top-10 teams in the fall but came up on the wrong end of 1-0 results in six of its nine matches.

Carr's team will look to find its offensive groove on Thursday night after netting six versus UCO last week in its spring tune-up.

THE RETURN

OU welcomes the return of Jazzy Richards, who started in 10 games as a sophomore and chose to opt-out of the fall season due to COVID-19 concerns. Richards, a product of The Woodlands, Texas, scored a brace in the exhibition with UCO. Joining Richards on the pitch for the first time this season is defender Erika Middleton, who started all 19 games for the Sooners in 2019.

COACH CARR'S THOUGHTS

On North Texas:
"We know that North Texas is a talented and athletic team. We must be prepared to meet the game's demands from a physical standpoint and show our quality in the right moments. We're really excited about the game, but we know that ultimately, it's about how we play and execute that will determine the outcome. UNT is a perennial team, and they know how to win, so it'll be a really good task for us on Thursday."

On improvements since the fall:
"We've had a lot of transition in personnel, and that was important. Anytime there's a change in the program, there are new expectations and goals, so we've done some things a little bit different in terms of shape and partnerships. But our match with UCO last week was an excellent starting point."

UP NEXT

Oklahoma returns to the pitch, and Big 12 play on March 13 when it takes on Iowa State in a neutral site game in Lawrence, Kan.
