NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team fell to conference rival No. 2 Texas, 3-0, Friday afternoon in Austin, Texas.
The Sooners dropped to the Longhorns, 25-17, 25-22, 25-22, as Texas outkilled OU 50-38. The Longhorns notched a .362 hitting percentage while holding OU to .277.
Texas narrowly led in digs with 37 to Oklahoma's 34. The two teams each notched 4.0 blocks.
Freshman
Guewe Diouf led the Sooners with 12 kills on the night while sophomore Sanaa Dotson tallied 10 kills of her own. Sophomore
Grace Talpash dished out 16 assists with sophomore
Olivia Curtis adding 14 assists.
Defensively, senior
Keyton Kinley led the way with 11 digs to lead all players. Freshman
Sam Anthony added five digs of her own and Talpash chipped in five. Dotson also led the Sooners with four blocks on the night.
The teams battled close in the first set with Texas taking an 11-7 lead early. The Sooners fought back to tie things up at 15-all. Texas used a 10-2 run to clinch the first set, 25-17.
In set two, the teams once again traded points early with the match being tied up at 12-12. Texas took a three point lead, but OU fought back to tie the match at 19-all. The Longhorns closed out the set, 25-22, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Sooners were in control early in set three, jumping out to a 10-6 lead. OU led by as many as seven points as they held a 17-10 advantage over the Longhorns. Texas used a 10-3 run to tie the match at 20-all. The teams traded points to 22-22, but Texas would close it out with a kill from Asjia O'Neal to take the set, 25-22, and the match.
The Sooners and Longhorns will meet again Saturday at noon in Austin.
