NORMANĀ -Ā The Oklahoma track and field teams open their 2021-22 indoor slate on Saturday at the Kansas State Winter Invitational in Manhattan, Kan.
The meet is scheduled to begin with the field events at 9:30 a.m. and track events at 12 p.m. A total of 33Ā Sooners are slated to compete in the season opener.
"I'm looking forward to our opener this weekend," said head coach Tim Langford. "While this will only be a smaller travel squad, we still look to be effective. I believe this weekend will show what we've been working on and where we need to go from here. Several newcomers will have the opportunity to take the track in a smaller competition and gain a little experience."
The Sooners return six student-athletes that qualified for the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.:Ā junior Mikeisha Welcome, seniors Chris Banks and Kristo Simulask, redshirt seniors Cooper Campbell, Demarius Smith and Vernon Turner.
The 2021-22 indoor season concluded with the Sooners bringing home a new indoor school record and a Big 12 title. Essence Thomas set a new triple jump record for the women at the Big 12 Indoor Championships, leaping 44-6 (13.56m). Kristo Simulask claimed a conference title in the men's heptathlon, scoring 5,569 points.
