NORMAN ā Oklahoma's
Tony Madrigal has earned Big 12 Wrestler of the Week honors, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
It is the first Big 12 weekly accolade for the senior from Oak Park, Ill., who won five matches en route to claiming the title in the 133-pound bracket at the Michigan State Open on Saturday. Madrigal defeated two opponents who had been previously ranked above him in No. 5 Lucas Byrd of Illinois and No. 18 Dylan RagusinĀ of Michigan. He then took downĀ 2019 All-American Rayvon Foley of Michigan State in the finals.
This marks the 52
nd time that an Oklahoma wrestler has won a weekly Big 12 honor. It is the first Big 12 Wrestler of the Week award to be handed out in the 2021-22 season, and the Sooners have now won the award in the first week of the season in back-to-back years after
Justin Thomas did it last season.
The Sooners now have three wrestlers on the roster who have won the award.Ā Thomas and redshirt senior

Madrigal and the Sooners return to the mat in Morgantown, W.Va., on Saturday when they take onĀ West Virginia.
