Groves Named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

November 15, 2021 | Men's Basketball

NORMAN – Oklahoma senior Tanner Groves was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week by the conference after aiding the Sooners to two victories against Northwestern State and UTSA last week.

Groves, a transfer from Eastern Washington, led the Sooners in points in both contests, scoring 15 points against the Demons in the season opener, and breaking the 20-point (21 points) threshold against the Roadrunners Friday night.

Against Northwestern State, Groves earned the start and played 27 minutes. His 15 points were team-high, as were his nine rebounds. Groves added a block and steal in the 77-59 victory.

The elder Groves found his rhythm against UTSA and led the OU offense with 21 points on 9-for-16 shooting from the field. The Spokane, Wash., product, wrangled five boards and added one block on the night.

Groves' nine field goals were tied for the second most in a single game last week in the league. Only Kansas' Ochai Agbaji, who was named Big 12 Player of the Week, tallied more field goals made (11) in a game.

The senior averaged 18.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest (all defensive) in the two games. He ranked fourth in the Big 12 in points and defensive rebounds per game and 10th in total rebounds per contest.

He finished the week 15-of-25 for a .600 field goal percentage and was one of two Big 12 players to attempt 25 or more shots and have a .600 or higher field goal percentage.

Groves and the Sooners are back in action Thursday, Nov. 18 against East Carolina in the first round of the Myrtle Beach Invitational in Conway, S.C. Oklahoma is guaranteed three games at the tournament and will play Old Dominion or Indiana State in the second round Friday.
