NORMAN – Paige Anderson recorded nine blocks and three Sooners had double-digit kills as the Oklahoma volleyball team pulled off the reverse sweep of TCU for a 3-2 victory (24-26, 23-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-13) Friday afternoon.
The Sooners (8-8, 2-3 Big 12) trailed the Frogs (6-7, 0-3 Big 12) 2-0 in the match before storming back to win three straight sets and take the victory.
Anderson led both the offense and the defense on the day. Along with her team-best nine blocks, the senior added 11 kills on a .381 clip.
Megan Wilson tallied 17 kills to go with three blocks and two assists.
Savannah Davison added 12 kills with four digs and three blocks of her own.
Peyton Dunn was just shy of yet another double-double with 43 kills and nine digs. The freshman setter also tallied five kills and three blocks.
Olivia LittleJim paced the defense with 18 digs on the night.
Callie Kemohah chipped in 14, while
Sam Anthony added nine.
Sabrina Simms finished with five blocks on the night, including a solo block, to go with three kills. The 16.0 total blocks by the team were a season-high for the Sooners.
In the first set, the Frogs took an early 5-3 lead before a 4-1 run gave the Sooners their first lead of the day at 7-6. TCU took back the lead with a 3-0 run and the Sooners answered with a 5-0 run of their own to make it 15-13 and bring up a timeout on the floor. Out of the break, the Sooners held their advantage until TCU tied things at 19-all. OU had set-point at 24-23 but a 4-1 scoring run by the Frogs gave them set one, 26-24. Wilson had eight of the Sooners 15 kills in the first set, hitting on a .583 clip to start the match.
In set two, TCU once again took the early lead at 10-7. The Sooners used a 3-0 run to tie the match at 10-all with kills from
Kristen Birmingham and Davison. The Frogs would take back the lead at 14-10, forcing OU to call timeout. Out of the break, the Sooners capitalized on TCU errors and a kill from Anderson to pull within two at 17-15. OU fought back from the deficit as a kill from Wilson tied the match at 22-all. With the match tied at 23, Wilson was blocked on back-to-back attempts to give TCU the set, 25-23.
The Frogs took a quick 4-0 lead in the third set. The Sooners fought back to tie the match at 5-all as Simms made an immediate impact grabbing a block and a kill during the run. OU took the lead at 7-6, but the teams continued to trade the lead until OU took a two-point advantage at 12-10. The Sooners would continue to control the third set as a 3-1 run gave them an 18-13 advantage. OU would close out the set with a block from Wilson to earn the 25-18 victory. OU hit .345 in the set with 14 kills.
The teams traded points early in the fourth set with TCU taking a 6-4 lead. The Sooners took their first lead at 9-8 and pulled out to a two-point lead at 13-11. OU continued to hold the lead until the Frogs used a 3-1 run to earn the advantage at 17-16. The Sooners pulled back even at 19-all and capitalized on a TCU error to take the lead. A kill from
Sabrina Simms gave OU a 22-20 lead before the Frogs used a 3-0 run to tie the match at 23-all. A block from Simms and Anderson gave the Sooners a 25-23 victory and forced a decisive fifth-set.
The race to 15 was on in the fifth set as the Sooners jumped out to the early 5-3 lead after a kill from Dunn. TCU used a 4-0 run to take the lead at 10-8. Anderson and Dunn teamed up for the block to bring the score to 12-all. Anderson's ninth block of the match sealed the set, 15-13, and the match for the Sooners.
The Sooners and Frogs will meet again on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT. The match is set to air on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
