LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Oklahoma volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Kansas, 26-24, 14-25, 26-28, 22-25, Saturday afternoon inside Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena.
The Sooners (10-11, 4-6 Big 12) had their six-match winning streak against the Jayhawks (12-9, 4-6 Big 12) snapped in the loss. OU is now 6-2 all-time against Kansas under head coach Lindsey Gray Walton.
Savannah Davison led the offense with 17 kills, followed by 16 from
Megan Wilson.
Kristen Birmingham chipped in seven, while
Paige Anderson picked up five.
Peyton Dunn nearly picked up her second double-double of the weekend with 36 assists and eight digs.
Callie Kemohah led the defense with 20 digs, along with three assists.
Olivia LittleJim added 12 digs, while
Sam Anthony tallied 10 and
Aysia Harty added nine.
OU tallied 12.0 blocks as a team, led by eight from Anderson. Birmingham and
Tyler Alcorn each got in on four.
The Sooners started the first set hot with a 5-0 run to take an early 5-2 lead. A 3-0 scoring run from the Jayhawks gave Kansas the lead, 10-9, before a block from Alcorn and Wilson tied the match. At the media timeout, the Jayhawks led 15-13 and extended their lead to four points before a Davison kill stopped the run. A late 4-0 scoring run from the Sooners tied the match at 21-all. Another kill from Davison gave OU the lead, 23-22, and forced a Kansas timeout. Kansas pulled even at 24-all, but Birmingham closed out the set for the Sooners with a kill.
A service ace from Harty gave OU the early 5-3 lead in the second set. Kansas took the lead at 7-6, but Wilson came up with a huge kill to tie the set. An 8-3 run from the Jayhawks gave them a 15-10 lead at the first media timeout. Kansas continued their run, using a 4-1 advantage to take an eight-point lead, 19-11. The Jayhawks ultimately closed out the set, 25-14.
OU jumped out to an early 7-4 lead as Dunn and Anderson teamed up for the block to give the Sooners a three-point advantage. OU took a four-point lead, 13-9, to force the Jayhawks to call timeout. Out of the break, a 6-0 run from Kansas gave the Jayhawks the lead, 15-13. OU pulled even at 17-all and capitalize on a pair of KU errors to take a 19-17 lead. KU came back to take a 23-22 lead and the Sooners fought off two set points to tie the match at 24-all. Kansas took the third set, 28-26.
The teams traded points early in the fourth set with the matching tied at 6-all. Kansas would take a two-point lead at 11-9. A kill from Wilson put OU within one, 15-14. Kansas used a 4-0 run to push their lead to five, 19-14. Kemohah picked up an ace to make it 21-18 and force Kansas into using a timeout. The 6-0 run would continue as the Sooners pulled within one thanks to a kill from Davison. Kansas used a 3-1 run to end the match and take set four, 25-22.
