Big 12 Champions Return to the Mat for Red/White Scrimmage

October 21, 2021 | Wrestling

NORMAN - The reigning Big 12 Champion Oklahoma wrestling team is slated to host its annual Red/White Scrimmage Friday at historic McCasland Field House. Preliminary rounds begin at 4 p.m. with the finals expected to take place around 6:30 p.m.

Admission to the event is free as the wrestling program hosts fan appreciation night.

Ranked 12th in the preseason poll, the Sooners return nine starters from last year's lineup that delivered the program's 24th conference championship and first since 2002, including all seven NCAA qualifiers. Friday's scrimmage is set to pit that lineup against the depth that 2021 Big 12 Coach of the Year Lou Rosselli has compiled since his arrival in 2016.

Among the returners for Coach Rosselli's experienced squad is two-time Big 12 Champion, Dom Demas, who enters his senior season ranked 11th by Flo at 141 pounds. The Columbus, Ohio, product spent his summer on the international circuit, claiming the national title at U23s and a spot on the USA World Team, which will compete at the U23 World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, Nov. 1-7.

On either side of Demas in the lineup are a pair of Big 12 runners-up in Tony Madrigal at 133 pounds and Mitch Moore at 149. Madrigal comes in at No. 23 in the preseason rankings while Moore will start the season ranked 17th. Ā

Redshirt senior Justin Thomas announced his plans to return to Norman for one last season last spring and anchors the lineup at 157 pounds with a team-high 74 wins.
Jake Woodley looks to build on his finish from last year, when he became the lowest-seeded wrestler in NCAA history to make the national semifinal. His historic run cemented his place on OU's wall of All-Americans as the programs 277th all-time. Ā

Josh Heindselman opens his sophomore season ranked 16th in the nation at 285 pounds, fifth-highest among the nation's underclassmen heavyweights. The Piedmont, Okla., product came home to Norman with a gold medal that he won at the Junior Pan American Championship, as he dominated the fellow competition in the 125 kg bracket.

Troy Mantanona returns to the roster, as does 184-pound starter Darrien Roberts. They're joined at their weight classes by transfers Joe Grello (Rutgers) and Keegan Moore (N. Iowa). Anthony Mantanona and Greyden Penner are projected to occupy the 174-pound weight class.

NCAA Qualifier Joey Prata dons the Crimson and Cream at 125 pounds after transferring from Virginia Tech.

A host of Sooners are slated to hit the mat Friday night including four-time Oklahoma state champion Caleb Tanner, Carson Berryhill, Jacob Butler and Alejandro Herrera-Rondon, who was the nation's No. 1 recruit at 152 pounds as a high school senior last year.

Matchups for the scrimmage are still being finalized and will be released throughout the day on Friday on OU Wrestling's official Twitter account @OU_Wrestling and on the Oklahoma Wrestling Facebook page.
