NORMAN – The Oklahoma wrestling team celebrated the 2019-20 season by announcing its team awards as voted on by head Coach
Lou Rosselli and his staff on Thursday morning.
All-American
Dom Demas was presented with the program's Most Valuable Wrestler award following a 27-4 season. The Dublin, Ohio, product would've represented the Sooners as the No. 5 seed in the 141-pound class at this year's NCAA Championships had it been held.
Anthony Mantanona earned All-America honors as a redshirt sophomore en route to collecting the Most Improved Wrestler award from the coaching staff. The 174-pounder tallied big win after big win on his way to a runner-up finish at the Big 12 Championships to earn a top-10 national seed at NCAAs. The Palm Desert, Calif., product produced nine falls on the season, good for 15
th most in the country, earning him the award for Most Bonus Points too.
Elijah Joseph was honored with the Jimmy White award, which is awarded annually to a wrestler on the basis of team contribution, team spirit, athletic ability and individual achievement. Joseph, who normally wrestles at 174, moved down to 165 pounds to fill a need this season.
The Freshman of the Year was awarded to
Darrien Roberts, who posted a seventh-place finish at Big 12s in the 184-pound bracket. Roberts collected a 14-12 record this season with his only dual losses coming from ranked opponents.
Sophomore
Anthony Madrigal was awarded the Warrior Award, given annually to a wrestler who epitomizes a warrior mentality and constantly rises to the occasion. Madrigal exploded onto the national wrestling scene in 2020 after tallying a team-high 10 wins over ranked opponents. At the Big 12 Championships he clinched his NCAA berth on day one and then took fourth place on day two.
