For Mantanona, the second team All-American honor is the first of his career. The redshirt sophomore took the 174-pound weight class by storm in the 2019-20 season, rattling off a 21-7 record on his way to a runner-up finish at Big 12s. The Palm Desert, Calif., product finished the season ranked No. 9 nationally by the NCAA after compiling a 10-2 record in dual action and would've represented the Sooners at the NCAA Championships.
Anthony Madrigal earned an honorable mention by the NWCA for the first time in his career. The sophomore accrued a 21-9 record in 2019-20. His 11 wins over ranked opponents were the most on the team and the most among 133-pounders in the Big 12. He was awarded the No. 16 seed in the 133-pound weight class at the canceled NCAA Wrestling Championships.Ā
Each year the NWCA recognizes the outstanding work of the DI Student-Athletes by naming the All-Americans based on their achievements in the national championship, however, this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic the championships were canceled. All-American honors were based on each wrestler's overall body of work through the conference tournaments and up to the national championships.
