March 07, 2020 | Wrestling

TULSA, Okla. -- The Oklahoma wrestling team completed day one at the Big 12 Wrestling Championship on Saturday. After the dust had settled, two Sooners had clinched spots in Big 12 title bouts, and four had earned qualifications to the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Minneapolis, with two more wrestlers able to punch their tickets on day two.Ā

Dom Demas (141) will look to defend his title on Sunday night when he takes on the No. 2 seed Ian Parker from Iowa State. 174-pounder Anthony Mantanona will have his shot at the trophy when he meets No. 1 Bryce Steiert under the lights of the BOK Center a few matches after Demas.Ā

As a team, the Sooners sit in sixth place with 65.5 team points, nine more than they had in 2019 after day one.Ā

Demas advanced to the final via a thrilling 3-1 decision over Oklahoma State's Dusty Hone in the semifinal. Locked in a 1-1 tie with 10 seconds left, DemasĀ swept the leg of Hone and took him down to secure the 3-1 victory. His final opponent is Ian Parker, the 2-seed from Iowa State. The two have met four times in their careers, with Demas winning three of the bouts, including a 3-1 decision in sudden victory earlier this season and a 19-5 technical fall in December.Ā

Mantanona has burst onto the scene as a redshirt sophomore, and earned his 20th win of the season when he beat Iowa State's Samuel Colbray, 6-5, in the semfinal.Ā He'll take on Northern Iowa's Bryce Steiert, the No. 1 seed at 174, in the championship bout. Fans got a preview of the title match on Feb. 1 in Norman when Steiert got the best of Mantanona, earning a 7-2 decision.

The Big 12 received eight allocations at 133 pounds meaning that Anthony Madrigal secured his spot at the NCAA Wrestling Championships after earning a first-round bye as the No. 4 seed and then winning a quarterfinal match, 8-3, over South Dakota State's Zach Price. He would go on to lose to Northern Colorado's Mosha Schwartz in the semifinal.Ā Madrigal, a sophomore, will get a rematch with UNI's Jack SkudlarczyĀ on Sunday, with a spot in the third-place bout on the line. The Panther and Sooner met in Norman on Feb. 9 with Madrigal taking a 7-1 decision over Skudlarczy.Ā

The final Sooner to punch his ticket to Minneapolis on Saturday was Jake Woodley who won his quarterfinal match over No. 6 Tanner Orndorff via 6-2 decision, before he dropped a major decision to No. 2 Tanner Sloan, 8-0, to move him to the consolation bracket. Woodley can finish no worse than sixth, meaning he has earned a spot in the NCAA championships.Ā

Three other Sooners will compete in the consolation bracket in session three, with two looking to clinch spots in Minneapolis.Ā

Christian Moody will look to become a four-time NCAA qualifier on Sunday morning. He picked up a pair of consolation wins in Saturday's second session to put him into the consolation semifinals vs. 4-seed McGwire Midkiff (NDSU). The winner of that bout will move onto the third place match, officially clinching an NCAA berth.Ā

Justin Thomas, the No. 4 seed at 157, suffered a close 4-1 loss to No. 1 David Carr in the semifinals on Saturday. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native will take on UNI's Paden Moore, with the winner earning a spot in Minnesota.Ā

Darrien Roberts will square off with No. 8 Jacob Thompson of Air Force in the seventh-place bout on Sunday morning.Ā

The five Sooners competing in the consolation brackets will begin their session on Sunday at 11 a.m. inside the BOK Center with a live stream on ESPN+. The finals, featuring Demas and Mantanona, start at 6 p.m. and will be broadcasted live on Fox Sports Oklahoma.Ā
