No. 11 Baseball Rolls Past UAPB

NORMAN – The No. 11 Oklahoma baseball team struck out 21 batters and totaled 17 hits, cruising to a 13-2 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Wednesday evening at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
OU's 21 strikeouts set a Big 12 record for a nine-inning game. Freshman Jake Bennett (2-0) was perfect through his 4.0 innings, striking out nine batters. Sophomore Ben Abram struck out four over 2.0 innings in relief, and senior Braxton Webb (two strikeouts), junior Carson Carter (three strikeouts) and freshman Christian Ruebeck (three strikeouts) each pitched an inning to combine on the effort, which included zero walks.
The Sooners (11-3) wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard and led 11-0 through four innings. Junior right fielder Tanner Tredaway went 3 for 3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored while senior catcher Brady Lindsly finished with three hits and two RBIs. Junior designated hitter Justin Mitchell and junior outfielder Jordan Vujovich also drove in two runs. A total of 10 players recorded a hit, as the Sooners tallied 16 hits in the ballgame.
"Bennett set the tone early, attacking the mitt," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "He was executing one pitch at a time, and I don't think he missed a target in the first inning. When you get to score early like that, your pitcher is going to throw better breaking balls, and your fastball command is going to be a lot better.
"I was proud of the guys' situational hitting in the first inning and getting some big two out hits was huge too," Johnson continued. "I thought the two strike adjustments we made were big. We also really played against the ball. When you take a big lead, guys can start to get complacent, but today I thought we did a really good job of playing all 27 outs."
Oklahoma scored three runs in the first inning and led 9-0 after three frames. Junior first baseman Tyler Hardman singled in a run, Mitchell drove a sacrifice fly and freshman left fielder Kendall Pettis hit an RBI triple in the first inning. Tredaway doubled home a run in the second to make it 4-0.
The Sooners sent 11 batters to the plate, putting up five runs in the third. Senior shortstop Brandon Zaragoza hit an RBI double to right center, Tredaway knocked a two-run single, Lindsly singled in a run and Mitchell drew a bases-loaded walk. In the fourth, back-to-back doubles by Tredaway and Lindsly brought in two more runs to make it 11-0. Vujovich tacked on a two-run single in the seventh inning to make it a 13-1 score.
OU pitchers held the Golden Lions (4-9) without a hit until consecutive singles in the sixth inning. UAPB scored a run in the seventh inning on a base hit by pinch hitter Brady Moorman, and an error in the eighth allowed the second run to score. Starter Joel Barker (0-2) took the loss.
Oklahoma plays host to San Diego State for a three-game series Friday through Sunday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Game times are 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
