Demas Big 12 lead

Sooners Learn NCAA Championship Seeding

March 11, 2020 | Wrestling

NORMAN – The NCAA Wrestling Championship selection committee revealed the seeds and brackets for the 2020 NCAA Wrestling Championship on Wednesday evening. Oklahoma will be represented by six wrestlers at next week's Championship, which is scheduled to be held inside U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis from March 19-21.

The Sooners are led by All-American and 2020 Big 12 runner-up Dom Demas in the 141-pound weight class. Demas was awarded the No. 5 seed after a compiling a 25-4 record this season. He'll face Colorado's Matt Kazimir who is the No. 28 seed in the opening round. Last season, he was awarded the No. 9 seed in the weight class after winning the Big 12 championship as a freshman

Anthony Mantanona earned the No. 9 seed in the 174-pound weight class after finishing as runner-up at Big 12s last weekend. The redshirt sophomore leads the team with nine falls and will take on No. 24 Jacob Oliver from Edinboro in the first round. Mantanona will get a chance to redeem himself as his only bout versus Oliver came in February of 2019 and resulted in a loss for the then-freshman.

Sophomore 133-pounder, Anthony Madrigal, will represent the Sooners as the No. 16 seed. His path to the podium will begin with Big 12-foe Taylor Lamont from Utah Valley. A win in the first round would potentially match Madrigal up with No. 1-seeded Sebastian Rivera from Northwestern in the second bout of the championship.

At 157 pounds, Justin Thomas enters as the No. 17 seed and will prepare for a first-round bout with North Dakota State's Jared Franek who earned the No. 16 seed. The bout will be a rematch of the Big 12 Wrestling Championship's third-place bout which Franek won via 4-2 decision last weekend.

Jake Woodley claimed the No. 18 seed in the 197-pound weight class after a fifth-place finish at the Big 12 Wrestling Championship. The Pittsburgh, Penn., product will open his tournament with a match versus No. 15 Lucas Davison of Northwestern.

The final Sooner that qualified for the Championship is senior, and now four-time qualifier, Christian Moody. Moody heads to Minneapolis as the No. 31 seed after pinning his way to third-place at the Big 12 Championship in Tulsa. The senior will face Princeton's Pat Glory who is undefeated and the No. 2 seed in the opening round.
