NORMAN – The Oklahoma wrestling team (3-5 overall, 1-4 Big 12) continues Big 12 action Sunday when it hosts No. 18 Iowa State (6-4, 3-1) in a dual at McCasland Field House at 2 p.m. CT.
Ā
Iowa State has been off the mat since a 34-9 win over Fresno State on Jan. 31. The Cyclones have split their last four duals, with the two losses coming at the hands of then-No. 7 Arizona State and then-No. 8 Oklahoma State.

LAST TIME OUT

Oklahoma dropped a Big 12 dual to No. 15 Northern Iowa, 25-13, at McCasland Field House on Feb. 1. Four Sooners were victorious, but a pair of pins at 125 and 285 were too much to overcome.

Anthony Madrigal (133) earned his ninth ranked win of the season when he earned a 7-1 decision over No. 23 Jack Skudlarczyk, improving to 6-2 in dual action. He was followed on the mat by reigning Big 12 champion Dom Demas, who used his signature trip to knock off No. 14 Michael Blockhus in overtime at 141.

Other Sooner victories came from No. 20 Justin Thomas, who controlled his bout with UNI's Paden Moore from start to finish to earn a 10-2 major decision. Later in the dual, No. 14 Jake Woodley won his bout at 197 over Isaiah Patton, 5-2.

SOONERS IN THE RANKINGS

For the second consecutive week, the Sooners have five wrestlers ranked in the top-25 in their weight classes. All-American 141-pounder Dom Demas continued his time in the top-10, earning the No. 5 spot in InterMat's rankings, No. 7 by FloWrestling and No. 9 by TrackWrestling. Anthony Mantanona (174) joins Demas in the top-10 of Flo's ranking, coming in at No. 10, and is No. 14 and 15 in InterMat and Track, respectively. Fresh off a ranked victory,

Anthony Madrigal (133) is ranked No. 15 by both Flo and InterMat, and 20th by Track. Jake Woodley (197) is back in the top-15 after his 7-1 start in dual action. He is ranked No. 15 by Flo, 16th by InterMat and 18th by Track. Rounding out the rankings is Justin Thomas at 157 who earned a major decision last weekend and is ranked No. 17 by Track, No. 19 by InterMat and No. 22 by Flo.Ā

BACK FOUR MORE

The Sooners return four of five 2019 NCAA qualifiers to this season's starting lineup: Christian Moody (125), Dom Demas (141), Justin Thomas (157) and Jake Woodley (197).Ā OU's returning qualifiers have combined for an impressive 54-29 record on the season. In dual action this year, the quartet is a combined 21-9. In addition to the four returning qualifiers, Anthony Madrigal (133) and Anthony Mantanona (174) have both been solid veterans for the Oklahoma squad. Madrigal (16-7) has gone 9-2 against ranked opponents, defeating then-Nos. 10, 11, 12, 15, 17, 18, 20, 23 and 25. Mantanona (15-5) leads the team in wins via fall with nine pins, including five in his last seven victories.

DEMAS DOMINATING

Redshirt sophomore Dom Demas (141) has carried the momentum from his All-American season into the 2019-20 campaign. The reigning Big 12 champion is 7-1 in dual action and earned top-3 finishes at all three tournaments: second place at the Michigan State Open, first place at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic and third place at the Cliff Keen Invitational. The Columbus, Ohio, native leads the team in wins (19) and technical falls (5) and is second in pins (4).Ā

SEVEN-WIN CLUB

The Sooners boast three wrestlers in their lineup who have started 7-1 in dual action: Dom Demas (141), Justin Thomas (157) and Anthony Mantanona (174). Anthony Madrigal (133) follows those three with an impressive 6-2 record in dual action with a pair of ranked dual wins, and his only dual losses were to No. 11 Cam Sykora of North Dakota State and No. 23 Reece Witcraft of Oklahoma State.Ā

MAGNIFICENT MADRIGAL

Anthony Madrigal continues to impress in his sophomore campaign. The 133-pounder has matched his win total from his freshman year, boasting a 16-7 record this season. His nine wins over ranked opponents are four more than anyone else on the team.

MANTANONA THE MAN

Anthony Mantanona (174) has been on a tear during his redshirt sophomore season, tallying a team-high nine pins, good for fifth most in the country and most of any 174-pounder in Division I.Ā Mantanona started dual action with a 7-0 record before falling to No. 5 Bryce Steiert on Feb. 1.Ā

SERIES HISTORY

Sunday's dual will mark the 97th time that the Sooners and Cyclones have collided on the mat, as the two sides have met every season since 1947. Iowa State holds a 51-42-3 all-time series lead, but the Sooners have won eight of the last 11 contests, including the last two in Norman.Ā

SCOUTING THE CYCLONES

Iowa State is fresh off a 34-9 win over Big 12 foe Fresno State. The Cyclones are ranked 18th in the latest NWCA poll after a 3-1 start in Big 12 action.Ā ISU starts seven ranked wrestlers, led by No. 3 David Carr at 157 and No. 7 Jarrett DeganĀ at 149. Five of the Cyclone's routine starters have 14-plus wins on the season, and as a team ISU has split its last four duals, going 2-2 with both losses to top-15 teams in No. 5 Arizona State and No. 11 Oklahoma State.Ā
