NORMAN – Ana Llanusa scored her 1000
th career point and the Oklahoma women's basketball team completed the first-ever season sweep of West Virginia Wednesday as the Sooners topped the Mountaineers 68-58 inside Lloyd Noble Center.
With the win, OU improves to 12-20 on the year and 5-5 against the Big 12. West Virginia moves to 14-6 and 4-5 in league play.
"I thought we had a really balanced effort tonight. I thought our conviction and our connection defensively were outstanding and we did a really good job keeping them off the offensive glass," said head coach
Sherri Coale.
"We didn't shoot it particularly well, but we were never rattled by that - I think that's the biggest development was that we were calm and moved on to the next possession and if we didn't score, we got a stop. It was certainly a team effort and I really liked how we were – what our disposition was like collectively tonight."
Llanusa, in just her second game back after missing six games due to injury, led the way for the Sooners with 19 points. The junior reached the milestone on her 17
th point of the night, Euro-stepping her way to the basket. Llanusa shot 8-for-12 on the contest and added three rebounds and two steals.
"It honestly felt good to just be back out there," said Llanusa. I was just happy to be back out there."
The Choctaw, Okla., became the 36
th player in program history to score 1,000 and is the first to do so since Maddie Manning in 2017-18. Llanusa is the 17
th player to achieve the feat in three or fewer seasons.
"She just gives us such a different dimension – her speed, her ability to make plays with the ball in her hand and then the defensive pressure she can apply is huge," said Coale of Llanusa.
Three more Sooners chipped in points in double figures as
Madi Williams had 18 to go with eight rebounds;
Taylor Robertson scored 13 and pulled down seven boards; and
Gabby Gregory had 10 points.
Robertson added to her resume with three triples to move into sole possession of second on OU's single-season 3-pointers list with 108 this season.
OU held West Virginia to 39.7% shooting and kept the Mountaineers' leading scorers below their season averages, only allowing Kysre Gondrezick 13 and Tynice Martin 12 points. The Sooners forced 17 WVU turnovers and had eight steals, with Williams tallying four of those.
