AMES, Iowa – The Oklahoma women's basketball team took Iowa State to the wire but fell short on the road 63-59 on Saturday.
With the loss, OU dropped to 12-11 on the year and 5-6 against the Big 12. Iowa State improved to 14-8 overall and 6-5 in league play.
"We fouled too much," said OU head coach
Sherri Coale. "It took our starters out of the game and they had to play conservatively when they did play. When it's a tight game like that, you can go back to so many things, but 50-50 balls in the first half, not being able to play our guys and giving them so many free throw opportunities was the difference."
Four Sooners scored in double figures and OU out-shot the Cyclones 33.9% to 32.3% in the contest, but Iowa State capitalized on Oklahoma fouls to win the game from the free throw line where it was 14-of-18.
Ana Llanusa, making her first start in seven games, and
Taylor Robertson scored 15 points each to lead OU.
Gabby Gregory chipped in 12 and
Madi Williams had 11. Williams scored nine of her 11 in the fourth quarter as the Sooners took a lead after trailing most of the game.
The Sooners trailed 38-27 at halftime but got hot in the third quarter to cut Iowa State's advantage to five headed into the final period. Williams took over at the start of the fourth quarter, hitting three straight layups. The sophomore scored six straight points (she was assisted by Gregory, Robertson and Simpson) to give the Sooners the lead at 49-48 with 8:28 left in the game. Iowa State responded with an 8-0 run in the final four minutes to close the game, however.
The Cyclones' Kristin Scott led all players with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Ashley Joens joined her with a double-double, scoring 17 and pulling down 15 boards.
