NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 16 Oklahoma baseball team poured on 11 runs in the first five innings and pounded out 21 hits on its way to a 14-1 win over Texas Southern in the Sooners' home opener Tuesday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners and Tigers will meet again at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
The Sooners (3-1) scored in each of the first five frames and in seven of eight at bats. OU's 21 hits were its most since recording 22 against Mississippi State in the 2018 NCAA Regional.
Junior catcher Justin Mitchell went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and junior first baseman Tyler Hardman was 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Sophomore designated hitter Trent Brown hit a two-run home run for his first hit at OU, and junior right fielder Tanner Tredaway knocked his first career homer. Sophomore Ben Abram (1-0) threw 5.0 scoreless innings in the start, allowing only two hits with five strikeouts.
"I thought we came out and played against the ball as good as we've ever played since I've been here," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "We played against the baseball, and not the opponent, not the weather. Most teams will come look at the weather, the wind is blowing in, and it really demoralizes a hitter at that point. (Our hitters) have been focused on trying to hit line drives, hit ground balls and trying to keep the offense going."
A total of 16 Sooners recorded an at bat in the game and 12 recorded a hit. Freshman Connor Beichler started in center field and went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run in his first action of the season. In addition to Brown and Beichler, freshman infielder Carter LaValley, junior college transfer Vinny Bologna and sophomore Jaret Godman each recorded their first hits at OU.
Freshman Christian Ruebeck, senior Braxton Webb, senior Brad Demco and junior Carson Carter each pitched a complete inning in relief of Abram. Ruebeck struck out a batter and worked around a single in the sixth, Webb struck out two batters in a perfect seventh inning and Demco struck out two, stranding a pair of runners in the eighth.
The Sooners jumped on top in the first inning with consecutive RBI singles by Hardman and Mitchell. Zaragoza bunted for a single and scored on a wild pitch in the second. Brown homered and Beichler singled home senior second baseman Conor McKenna in the third inning. A sacrifice fly by Mitchell and an RBI single by freshman third baseman Peyton Graham in the fourth extended the lead to 8-0.
Tredaway's solo homer came with two outs in the fifth inning. Sophomore left fielder Diego Muniz, who reached base in all four plate appearances, singled and scored on a double by Hardman. Mitchell singled, and an error on the play scored Hardman to extend the lead to 11-0. Mitchell provided another RBI base hit in the seventh inning after Beichler hustled for a double on a routine line drive to left center field. Bologna and freshman outfielder Kendall Pettis each recorded their first RBI at OU with base hits in the eighth inning.
Texas Southern (0-5) scored a run in the top of the ninth when outfielder Roderick Coffee beat out an infield single to plate third baseman Nic Garza. TSU starter Tyler Hansen (0-1) took the loss on the mound.
