NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 16 Oklahoma baseball team totaled eight extra base hits in defeating Texas Southern 12-1 Wednesday at L. Dale Mitchell park, sweeping the two-game midweek series. The Sooners (4-1) scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to end the game by run rule.
Freshman Jake Bennett (1-0) struck out seven batters over 4.0 innings and earned the victory in his first career start. Sophomore Trent Brown belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to end the game. It was his second home run in as many days.
Bennett, making his first collegiate appearance on the mound, struck out the side in the first inning. The Bixby, Okla., product also retired the side in order in the fourth and allowed a run on four hits in his outing. Junior Aaron Brooks, junior Ledgend Smith, sophomore Jaret Godman and junior Zack Matthews pitched scoreless innings in relief of Bennett, allowing just two baserunners between them.
"Today we played against the ball, just like we did yesterday," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "The bullpen was great, we got some big hits when we needed them, and separated the game when we had to."
Junior first baseman Tyler Hardman started the scoring in the first inning with an RBI double, plating junior center fielder Tanner Tredaway. Tredaway, who was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, hit a two-run triple with two outs in the second inning to extend the lead to 4-0. Freshman left fielder Kendall Pettis hit a one-out single and scored on a wild pitch after a double by senior right fielder Brady Harlan.
The Sooners scored a run in each of the middle innings to take a 7-1 lead. Tredaway added a sacrifice fly in the fourth, senior shortstop Brandon Zaragoza laced an RBI double in the fifth and senior catcher Brady Lindsly singled home Hardman in the sixth. Both of Hardman's hits in the game were doubles.
OU put away the game with five runs in the eighth inning. Senior Conor McKenna led off with a single and scored on a dropped pop up that allowed Lindsly to reach base. Graham, who doubled, scored on a grounder by Zaragoza and Brown followed with his game-ending home run.
Freshman second baseman Logan Kohler, in his first collegiate start, also recorded his first career hit on a single to right center field in the fourth inning. The Sooners tallied six doubles, two triples and a home run in the game. OU totaled 26 runs and 34 hits in two games against Texas Southern.
The Tigers (0-6) scored in the third inning on an RBI single by first baseman Oscar Ponce and finished with five hits. Starter Paul Kindervater (0-2) took the loss for TSU.
Oklahoma plays host to Illinois State for a four-game series this weekend at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners and Redbirds will play a single game at 3 p.m. Friday, a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
